Keeping Kentville Connected
The Cornwallis Inn originated with the Aberdeen Hotel that was built near the train station – situated so that passengers couldn’t miss it when they got off the train! In 1920, the Dominion Atlantic Railway purchased the Aberdeen hotel and renamed it the Cornwallis Inn. A larger and more modern hotel was soon needed, so the first Cornwallis Inn was demolished in 1930, and a new building erected on Main Street.

The new Cornwallis Inn cost $1million to build, and the amazing thing was that it was constructed in only 208 working days! The exterior of the building is made from New Minas Qurartzine that came from the Wolfville Ridge and was the same stone that was used to face many of the buildings at Acadia University. A total of 1200 tons of bricks were supplied by LE Shaw Limited in Avonport. The clockface on the Southwest tower used to be a part of the old post office – located on Aberdeen Street. However, when the post office was scheduled for demolition in 1964, a group of citizens lobbied to at least save the clock. And so it was, and it ended up here in the clock tower!

Citizen Questions
Question: Are there going to be any picnic tables put up where people can sit to eat lunch?
Answer: The picnic tables distributed around town typically find their way to larger recreation and green spaces like Miner’s Marsh and Memorial Park, however we are currently working on installing a number of benches downtown to provide folks with resting spaces to enjoy during nice days.  A seating area with planters full of flowers and veggies is planned for the large sidewalk area on Main Street which should serve as a nice place to enjoy lunch once it’s installed!  Anyone interested in having a bench placed near their business can request one by contacting Lindsay Young, lyoung@kentville.ca
