Summer has always been my favorite season. When I was young, I just assumed that this was because I loved the freedom of not having to go to school. As an adult there is no "summer break" - but I'm still in love with summer! I've been thinking about what it is I like so much, and I just think it's people's attitude in summer. The long days of sun makes people feel less hurried to get everything done. And when you put on your flip-flops, everything seems just a little more relaxed.

Theme: Capturing Summer
Today, we challenged our Creative Team to create the "perfect" summer layout. We wanted to see if it was possible to convey the feeling of summertime in just one perfect page. These layouts are all about expressing the relaxation and happiness that comes with summer - by looking at them, you can almost feel the sun on your skin!
Say “perfect summer” and I picture an idyllic tropical beach with white sand and crystal blue sky and sea. Now, unfortunately, we don’t have many of those here in the UK, but I do have plenty of beach photos that are gray and dull! So to create my perfect summer layout, I had to be a bit creative with my gray photo.
I applied two adjustment layers to my photo (Brightness/Contrast and Curves). Using them both completely washed out my photo, but by creating a layer mask on the Curves layer that “erased” my son, then duplicating and inverting (Ctrl+I) that mask on the Brightness/Contrast layer (to erase everything except my son), I achieved a “whiter” look to my background but kept the vibrancy of my son. Add a couple of sunbursts - and I have the “perfect summer” beach photo! - Anna Burrows

The color yellow is associated with energy, and orange is associated with sunshine. So I knew on this layout of our favorite summer activity, I wanted to use lots of warm oranges and yellows. The photos had lots of cool blues because they were pool photos, so I changed them to black and white to keep the warmth in the layout and to maintain the summery feel I wanted for this scrapbook page. It is, after all, a layout about summer and what we like to do every single summer - not necessarily about swimming on one particular day. - Melanie Cockshott

When asked to capture the “feeling” of summer, it was simple – this photo of Callan dancing under the sprinkler with complete abandon conveys all my favorite summer feelings: freedom, fun, and exhilaration. My page has the same carefree feel, with a big bold pattern and word art, supported by similar colors and a descriptive quote.
