Gold Cup 2014 / Coppa Comune di Monte Argentario
The home team wins back the Argentario Gold Cup after 16 years.
With eight highly competitive teams took place last weekend the 2014 Gold Cup. On Sunday the tournament finish with an exciting Finale that confronted the Polish team The Tides and the local of Argentario Polo Club. With great performances from Condesse and Irastorza the visitors took a comfortable lead, which placed them at the mid-match as strong candidates to take the trophy. But Argentario never gave up, and led by Santi Loza (scored 8 goals) the full team reacted to force an extra chukka. With the sun that was hiding behind the Monte Argentario, the extra time was played almost entirely. Between exciting and spectacular runs both teams had some chances to score, but this time luck was finally on the side of the locals whom got a penalty from 60 yards that Loza did not wasted. The third place went to La Mimosa, and Enira/Cassiopeia won the subsidiary cup.

Coronation Cup 2104
Once again the national teams of England and Argentina played the match for the Coronation Cup and Argentina was the winner again. It was the fifth edition of this trophy played between these two countries that wins the AAP team (1953, 1995, 2000, 2009 and 2014). There were four more wins for them (1975, 77, 78 and 81) but under the name of South America. This was also the second time that the two best Polo players in the world, Adolfo Cambiaso and Facundo Pieres played and win together the trophy (2009, 2014)
After some discussion between the two teams, it was agreed that they should play with the highest handicap in the world that they may hold. Thus England over the original 24 goals went to 26, and Argentina from 26 to 27, which determined that the British received a one goal lead.
The game started with a fast reaction of the English team, who managed to finish the first chukker with a lead of 3-1. But then beyond the effort of the British that really played a very good match, Argentine dominated the game and everyone could clearly see why these two players are indeed different from the rest, and by far the best on the planet.

The Coronation Cup.
Some 61 years ago Queen Elisabeth II was crowned Queen. The Hurlingham Polo Association founded a tournament of a maximum of 24 goals in honour of her ascending to the throne. The cup was one which had been first played for in 1911 to celebrate the coronation of George V. After the war it was not regularly played for and indeed for the first 18 years for the Queen’s reign the competition did not take place. The cup was finally brought out of the trophy cupboard in 1971. Over the years, the Coronation Cup has become one of the most prestigious polo event anywhere outside Argentina.
The founding final in 1953 was played in the rain, even if, like this year, the final was between England and Argentina. Just like this year many teams had argentine players in them. Then as today Argentina won, but back in ’53 it was only by a single goal as England came back from 3 goals down at the beginning of the last chukker.
There were nevertheless nations represented then that have faded somewhat from the front of the polo scene. Casting an eye on down the list of participants give a good idea of polo back then. As Prince Charles watched the match this year, perhaps his thoughts went back to some of those players in that first final who he would certainly meet over the next half a century or so. Some things change and others remain the same.

Comments & Opinion
Eyes on the fillies or eyes on the ball
Sometime ago no groom ever wore a hard hat or cap. No player, man or woman would think of ever wearing elbow pads, and heaven or hell only would have thought of back pads. Times have moved on and yellow fluorescent jackets on the roads have now become the norm, to such an extent that some even joke that yellow or orange jackets will soon be obligatory once one leaves the bedroom. Now polo is a sport in which, and few would deny it, one still has to judge and decide what is proper, what is reasonable, and what is not. In many senses, polo reveals the essence of life and what most definitely is not. Those of us who were raised to ride without stirrups but with “botas de potroâ€* do not recognise the world that has come from England where everything can be insured. Lloyds Insurance was once a place where anything (and everything) could be insured, but that mind-set was never one which was shared elsewhere. We rode, we played, and when accidents took place, which happened very infrequently, each and every one of us contributed. The real difference was that, back then the obligations we had were not monetary, one might lend his pony, another his wife to nurse a sick person and someone else to pay the rent but it was never a question of rights, it was a question of what we owed to the person who unfortunately had had, in the true sense of the word “an accidentâ€.
After the Coronation Cup and the Gold Cup when even the goal judges were covered with padding that even a wicket keeper** would have been ashamed of, it might be worthwhile asking if those goal judges (grooms and even spectators) might be better employed keeping their eyes on the ball and on the fillies on the field. For those whose passion is fillies but of a different nature, a little move shows much, but at the end of the day one can hardly pretend to have seen nothing. One was there or one was not.
Polo is one of the few sports today which has kept it’s majestic, mystic and savage nature. Airbags and safety belts may become part of the sport which we all love, but before even the ponies are padded and the spectators are obliged to wear orange, may we continue to live and love that wonderful sport. As a friend said not too long ago, the most dangerous thing in life is living…
