Magazine Articles Wanted
The annual Ontario School Bus Association (OSBA) magazine, “School Bus Ontario” is currently in production. The magazine will be distributed to schools, bus operators, school boards/consortia, transportation officers, directors of education, MPP’s, and all members of OSBA.
We are looking for your input and assistance on two fronts:
- Do you have any topics/suggestions for articles?
- Do you have any interesting or innovative media releases, stories or articles that you have already developed/published internally that you would like to share with the Ontario school bus industry?
If you would like to submit an article, we would kindly appreciate your attention to the following guidelines:

Illuminated ABS Trouble Lights
Occasionally we are asked by bus operators if the ABS (trouble) light is lit on a school bus instrument panel yet the service brakes are fully operational, can the bus still be operated legally? The answer is yes. As far as the daily inspection goes, and the day-to-day operation of the bus, the regulations don’t list an activated ABS lamp as a “prescribed defect” therefore the bus can be legally operated with the ABS light on. However, an ABS trouble light is a defect in regard to the periodic 6 and 12-month safety inspection, but only where the operator has already (voluntarily) switched over to the National Standard NSC 11b Version 2006. If the operator has not yet switched over to the NSC standard, and is continuing to do the 6 and 12-month inspections using HTA Reg. 611, Schedules 1, 2 and 4, the yellow or orange safety sticker can still legally be applied even if an ABS trouble light is on. But for operators who have already made the (voluntary) switch to NSC 11b Version 2006, the exemption for an ABS trouble light expired on January 1, 2014, so any bus manufactured with ABS (Date of manufacture April 2000 and later) cannot be issued a safety sticker if an ABS trouble light is lit.

P.R.I.D.E. Program Master Trainers Available To Help Improve Your Driver Training Program
Do you require expert evaluation, guidance and/or assistance with your in-house safety and training programs? If so, perhaps think about contracting the Professional Instructor in Driver Education (P.R.I.D.E.) Program master trainers. "Sometimes our own internal systems, policies and styles can become complacent so it is helpful to get external feedback and perspective about things we are doing well and things we could consider doing differently", said Graham Walker, Manager of the West Region, GO Transit. P.R.I.D.E. Program Master Trainers are available for a variety of undertakings including observation/feedback of internal trainer skills and training sessions and customized sessions at safety workshops or driver start-up meetings (excludes creating or revising a Recognized Authority's driver training program curriculum under the MTO Driver Certification Program DCP). "We have had several P.R.I.D.E.
