Where the Bear Sleeps - Stories from the Kalevala
Performance Storytelling with Nick Hennessey

Friday 5 September 8.00pm
The Storey, Meeting House Lane,Lancaster

Using spoken word, rhythm and song, award-winning storyteller and musician Nick Hennessey will take you deep into the snow-filled forests of the far north when he performs a collection of ancient Finnish stories in Where the Bear Sleeps.

Taken from the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, the legends tell of the stealing of the sun and moon and their imprisonment in the northern mountain, of how the bard Väino made his harp of fishbones, and how the mighty smith Ilmarinen swung his hammer to forge a new light for the heavens.

A professional singer, songwriter and storyteller, Nick Hennessey is especially interested in the folk traditions of Northern Europe and their relationship to landscape and community. In 2000, he won the World Championship in epic-singing in Espoo, near Helsinki, with a performance of the Kalevala, and he regularly returns to perform the songs in English for Finnish audiences.
