A Lesson from the Lake

By Lori Jacobs

I recently enjoyed a few days reconnecting with girlfriends at the lake. As we walked into a restaurant for pizza, we heard the sweet little voice of a blond-haired, blue-eyed, nearly 2-year-old. "Hi!"

She sat at a table with her daddy, obviously enjoying a very fun evening eating pizza and greeting total strangers as they entered the restaurant. The hostess directed us to a table near the two of them and we all became fast friends. We learned a bit of their story while Lauren, our newest tiny friend in her little white sundress and purple crocs, entertained us.

As our food was being served, they made their exit. Lauren freely gave a hug to my friend before she took her daddy's hand and happily headed out the door for ice cream, undoubtedly to entertain and greet other strangers while enjoying her next tasty treat.

The surprise of the evening came later when we asked for our bill. The server brought our ticket, marked 'paid,' with a little note that simply read:

"Enjoy your time in Clear Lake. Love, Lauren"

My friends and I made many memories during those few days, but lately, when I think about my time away, the picture that comes to mind is the sweet face of a little girl, clearly secure and loved by her daddy, welcoming strangers. The gesture of kindness made its mark on my life. Since then, my daily prayer has been, "Lord, let me feel so secure in your love for me, that I extend that love to others, even strangers. Especially strangers.

Let's make our mark, showing God's love with a pure heart, without expecting anything in return. Listen to His voice as He directs you to show kindness to someone you may or may not know.

"Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it."  (Hebrews 13:2)

Hot August days call for refreshing        fruit smoothies. This is our favorite.        (Makes 1 serving, so adjust                     accordingly.)

  Ashley's Mango smoothie:
     *1 cup cubed frozen Mango
     *1/2 cup orange-strawberry juice (or
any other tropical fruit juice that
        sounds yummy to you)
*1/4 cup Coconut Water (or plain
         water)
   Blend on high until desired
   consistency. Pour & enjoy!
