WINTER WINES

The Franschhoek Motor Museum was proud to be the host venue for this year’s Franschhoek Winter Wine Festival. This has become an established annual event and it is encouraging to see the numbers of exhibitors – producers from all around the valley turned up to present their wines – and spectators grow each year. L’Ormarins Estate’s own Protea and Terra del Capo wine ranges were also on promotion for the punters to taste. Once again the event was a total success and blessed with one of the best winter’s days of the year. WH

FMM ATTENDS NEW FERRARI SERVICE CENTRE

The museum has a number of desirable Ferraris in its collection and recently accepted an invitation to attend the opening of the newly-formed Carlo Viglietti service centre in Gauteng. Long time friend of FMM Carlo Viglietti along with Pablo Clark Racing have set up a base of operations in 6th Street, Wynberg, Johannesburg, and the new company is able to undertake the servicing and restoration of all models of Ferraris. Carlo brings countless years of experience to the partnership and now has some of the best facilities in the country available to him. WH

OILY RAG RUN

FMM’s consultant engineer Dickon Daggitt initiative in organising an Oily Rag Run for pre-1960 unrestored cars is getting up to speed. Early entries include a 1927 Buick, 1932 Lagonda, 1934 Ford, 1935 M45 Lagonda, 1958 Austin-Healey and a 1959 ‘Auntie’ Rover. FMM is planning to enter a 1926 Chrysler Model 58 (the revamped Maxwell 25), a 1933 Ford pick-up and a 1956 Studebaker Champ and possibly the 1926 Talbot 14/45 that was featured in the Dec/Jan 2013/14 edition of Classic & Performance Car Africa magazine. The event will take place on Sunday 14 September, starting early/mid-morning in central Cape Town and ending early afternoon with lunch at Franschhoek. For further details and entry applications, e-mail Dickon at dickon@worldonline.co.za. MM

ON SHOW

Amongst the new displays introduced last month, the line-up of Alfa Romeos continues to attract lots of attention with visitors drawn to the marque’s Cuore Sportivo (Sporting Heart). The handful of models chosen from the collection to be on display in Hall C are a 1947 6C 2500 SS, 1955 1900 SS, 1959 Giulietta Spider, 1969 1750 GTV and a 1971 Montreal. MM

AFTERMARKET

The replies received to last month’s newsletter’s picture query were all correct in indentifying the out-of-shape car taking part in the May 1930 Muldersdrift Hillclimb as a Salmson. This month while searching through some auto archive material that had been donated to me, I stumbled across this photo of this Baur-bodied Auto Union F7 Meisterklasse Coupé. Question is, does anyone know of its whereabouts? And as a final ‘smiley’, how about this 1967 ad for Shelby GT road cars? The point trying to be made is about safe performance and the pay-off line is “Suddenly, everything you (and your wife) ever wanted in a car is here!” These days it is all about SUVs. How times have changed… MM

EXHAUST BLIPS
