Pride of Strathcona County Award
Thank you Mayor Carr, Council Members and to my neighbours who nominated me. My involvement in the formation of the Gilmore Park Community League has been an incredible journey. There is a quote that resonates for me from Stephen Mandel "I don't think there's an individual that gets involved in an organization who doesn't gain more than they give" Through this experience I have gained new skills, a greater sense of pride in my community and most importantly a network of neighbours who have become good friends. My desire and passion to see a revitalized Gilmore Park was only possible because of a successful partnership with Strathcona County and the generous support of my family and neighbours.
Some think creating something with those around you is idealistic but I feel fortunate that in our community it became reality. What started out to be about playground equipment morphed into so much more, even extending beyond our County to giving to our global neighbours in Honduras.
Neighbour power is silent on many streets but it can be sparked with a casual conversation or a simple gathering over a meal with the people where you live. Just as my parents did for me let’s teach our children to focus less on consuming and more on being good citizens.
It was a great honour to receive this award for community service and I encourage you to find out ‘Who are the people in your neighbourhood?’ you will be amazed by who you find.
