We are on the road this month finishing up a round of BOOST Leadership Boot Camps and inspiring great leaders to inspire others and build high performing teams and quality programs. It’s been a blast working with Site Directors all over the country and getting to see these leaders motivated and excited to create change.

Middle school campers from Whittier's Jump Start Summer Program went camping at Camp Big Bear, many for the first time! The campers enjoyed many firsts like kayaking, paddle boarding, boating on a pontoon and swimming in a lake. The looks on their faces were priceless!
It was also new to many of the camp counselors from the Reach For The Stars Program. We all learned together. The camping field trip supported our "Water, Water, Everywhere" theme for this summer. The campers had such a great experience that most of them did not want to go home. We can't wait to plan next year's adventure.
The Reach For The Stars After School Program has been serving Whittier City School District youth and their families for over 14 years. Our program vision is to produce responsible citizens who have the 21st Century skills they will need to become successful in college, career and in life.
During the summer months we offer the highly acclaimed Jump Start Summer Learning Program. At this year’s BOOST Conference, the Jump Start Program was one of the programs that was recognized by State Superintendent Tom Torlakson for being an “Outstanding Summer Program.”
Each summer we serve approximately 800 elementary and middle school students. With the summer theme, “Water, Water, Everywhere” we use project-based, collaborative learning to teach the students about the world’s oceans, lakes and rivers and why they are so important.

OST Highlight: What Are the Impacts of Afterschool STEM?
This new paper, “Examining the impact of afterschool STEM programs,” provides an overview of the recent research findings about the importance of afterschool and other out-of-school time experiences for STEM learning. It then summarizes evaluation data from a selection of strong afterschool STEM programs and describes the types of substantive impacts these programs are having on participating youth.

Cornicha West, Program Director Tap in Academy

For the past 3 years Cornicha has served as Tap In Leadership Academy's Program Director overseeing our after school and summer programs. Cornicha started as a volunteering parent during our 2010 Summer Enrichment Program. Her administrative and organizational skills were just what our grassroots organization was in need of at the time. To everyone's joy, Cornicha made the decision to join the Tap In team! She has a real passion for youth development. Cornicha is able to build relationships and partnerships that Educate- Equip-Empower our young scholars, their families, and community partners. Understanding that you can not fully care for children without caring for their families needs as well, Cornicha has worked tirelessly to ensure that we have amazing Family enrichment Program that caters to the concerns of parents.
Cornicha says, "The best part of my day is spending time at a site. When a scholar remembers my name and includes me in what they are doing it lets me know that I have a genuine connection with them. It is a daily reminder that my life's purpose is to be a positive influence in the life of a young person and that is what keeps me going."
This summer, Tap In expanded its program to Chicago. This was made possible mainly because of Cornicha's strengths and ability to manage our home sites in Champaign. Her zest for life and smile are infectious. She has already begun plans for next years Summer Enrichment Programs with plans to expand to neighboring cities. Deadline: August 29, 2014 Ronald McDonald House not only try to improve the health and well-being of children directly through its programs, but also work with non-profit organizations around the world that are making an immediate, positive impact on children who need it most. Grants to these organizations extend the reach and impact of RMHC and move donation dollars quickly through to areas in their time of need.

Youth Activity: Thrively Strength Exploration
Prep Time: 1 Hour
Activity Time: 2 Hours
Grade Level: 4th through 8th grade
Inclusion: Children with special needs
Group Size: Individual, Small Group, Large Group
Environment: Indoor (computer lab)
Goals/Objective: What your students can learn:
• All children have unique strengths that help to make up who they are as individuals.
• Strengths are distinct from interests. Being “good” at an activity can be the result of many strengths working together. For example, skiing is not a strength; skiing is an interest, and many strengths are what makes someone good at skiing.
• Possessing innate strengths is a beginning, not an end. Strengths need to be developed and nurtured to realize the full extent of their impact on individual success.
Materials Needed: Computers with internet access, earphones, Thrively Teacher Toolbox
Preparation: Create master teacher account (Parent Account). Add each student as a "child" under the teacher account. Each student may log in, select their profile page, add their interests, then begin the Strength Assessment.
Activity Directions: Step 1: Introduce Concepts (15-25 minutes)
• Lead a brief discussion about strengths. Explain that each child has unique strengths, and that there are vast opportunities in the world that are perfectly suited to each of us. Step 2: Explain the Assessment & Address any Questions (10 minutes) Step 3: Administer Assessment (30 minutes)
• Reserve 30 minutes for the test • Results are instantaneous and can be printed immediately
• A “Save and exit” option exists for teachers who would like to administer the test in batches Step 4: Review Results & Explore Activities (20 minutes)
• Students will receive a Strength Profile and will spend 10 minutes reading the profile results Step 5: Discussion (40 to 60 minutes)
• Students have the opportunity to share their answers to the discussion questions. Step 6: Teacher Survey

Summary:Thrively is a strength exploration platform that enables children to discover their unique strengths and pursue their true passions. Our mission is to help kids understand their strengths and discover exciting opportunities that build on and develop those strengths. The Thrively experience starts with a Strength Assessment, which is a powerful online investigation designed specifically for youth by two of California’s seven board-certified pediatric neuropsychologists. After completing the assessment, children receive their custom Strength Profiles, and our patent-pending algorithm begins providing personalized streams of recommendations from over 120,000 children’s activities. Ultimately, the Thrively process helps schools and families provide children with opportunities to discover their passions and to dive deep into interests in which they can excel.
