Are you currently a Post-Secondary Student?
We need YOU!
We are seeking Advisory Panel members!

Volunteer for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am / Parapan Am Games!

The Toronto 2015 Pan Am / Parapan Am Games will be the largest multi-sport event held in Canada. The province of Ontario is privileged to host the games and within our very own Region of Peel events will be held in the City of Mississauga and the Town of Caledon.

The games will host over 10,000 athletes representing over 40 nations and territories. To see the games through to success, Toronto 2015 requires the valuable contributions of over 20,000 volunteers. This is your golden opportunity to be part of this mega sporting event. Whether you prefer to usher spectators to their seats or prepare the field of play, if you are 16 years of age by January 2015, you have an opportunity to contribute as a volunteer.

As the local volunteer centre serving the Region of Peel, Volunteer MBC’s Mississauga and Brampton Centres offer TO2015 video kiosks to assist all residents across Peel with the games' volunteer application and video interview process. Simply call us at 905.238.2622 to schedule an appointment and we will guide you through the process.

Volunteer Spotlight:
Fransisca's Story

My name is Fransisca Tjandra and I am from Indonesia. I graduated from a well-known secretarial college in my country and worked as secretary during the first year of my career. I spent most of my time working in the retail business for high fashion brands such as Emporio Armani, Issey Miyake, Manolo Blahnik and Gucci as a Brand Manager which enabled me to travel and meet new people from different countries.

In 2011, my family moved to Canada in order to provide me with a better education and future for our children. Canada offers a lot of good universities, so we thought it would be a good experience for our children to get the education from world-class universities.

When we arrived in Canada, we spent the first few days looking for school for my children and to register them. We were asked to get our children assessed before they can come to school and that was when I got to know about Polycultural Immigrant and Community Services (Polycultural). I met Doris Hinscapie, one of the Settlement Counsellors, at the Assessment Centre.

Later, I was also introduced to Sherry Abdelmessih, a Settlement Worker from Polycultural, at my children’s School’s Open House. Sherry contacted me whenever she had an event at my children’s school, which included events such as Financial Literacy, Job Search Workshops and Tax Reporting.

In November 2012, I joined the LINC Program at Polycultural’s Sheridan Centre location. After I finished my LINC Program, I came to Snezana Gabric, Program Manager, and asked her whether there was an opportunity for me to volunteer within their organization. Snezana gave me the opportunity to help her with Administration, which aligned with my education and past working experience. Today, I continue to volunteer with Polycultural and have been given the opportunity to meet my Canadian work experience requirement and most of all, I like volunteering with their organization.

Article: The case for volunteering; yes, there’s something in it for you!

Source: Murali Murthy, Canadian Immigrant Magazine (www.canadianimmigrant.ca)

"OK, WIFM — ‘What’s in It For Me’”? If that’s your immediate reaction on reading the title of this article, read the following statements and see if any of them apply to you:
  • I am looking for a job, but don’t have the relevant Canadian experience.
  • (Or vice versa) I am unable to get experience because I don’t have a job.
  • I wish I could improve my skills to get better at my job.
  • I wish I could make a career change, but am unable to decide what I want to do.
  • I am interested in a new profession, but am unsure of how to get in or what to do once in.
If even one of these statements applies to you, then volunteering could be just the boost your career needs. Here are a few proven ways volunteering can help you reach your goals:
  • Valuable Canadian experience
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Skills enhancement
  • Network expansion
  • Career exploration
  • Confidence booster
In the end, everyone wins
And here’s a last piece of news to bolster the argument: volunteering is a great way to learn responsibility and give back to the community. This is also the reason, why schools across Ontario require students to complete 40 hours of volunteer and community service work in order to get their diploma.

Volunteering is a win-win situation. By helping others, you also get the opportunity to enhance your professional credentials. You will find that giving some of your time and expertise will pay off in more ways than one.
