Support the White Pine Sash Legal Defense and Education Fund!

The NMCDC has established a White Pine LDEF to support advocacy on behalf of the neighborhood in the matter of the clean-up at the White Pine Sash Superfund site. The NMCDC has a long history as a watchdog of the White Pine Sash mitigation, starting with the organization's incorporation in 1996, and has been a principal in several federally- and locally-funded investigational, educational, and legislatively-adopted community planning efforts related to the Facility, its former employees, and the adjacent residential and commercial neighborhoods.

At the proposed cleanup plan's public hearing in Missoula on March 11, 2014, an extremely concerned public was assured that comment from the affected community would be given significant weight in DEQ's final determination and ultimate Record of Decision.  Public comment on DEQ's plan ended April 14th and received an extreme preponderance of testimony (in a ratio of more than more than one hundred to one) demanding a revision of DEQ's position to one that would require a residential-level standard for the site's 19-acre vacant lands parcel.

Unfortunately, even in the face of overwhelming community pushback, DEQ's lackluster history of performance with this superfund facility gives little confidence that the Department, despite its own reassurances will be appropriately responsive. This is the reason the NMCDC has elected to retain legal council and create a legal defense and educational fund to support the neighborhoods' continued fight for a full cleanup of the site.

How can I help?

The NMCDC is hosting pint nights in August to drum up support for the White Pine Sash Legal Defense and Educational Fund. If you can't make it, get in touch with us at 829-0873 to find out how to contribute.
