Happy New Year!

President's Column

Dear Fellow Members,

As we begin a new year, we do so with another new board and as is often the case, this year’s board is a mixture of returning and new officers. In January, this new board will look back at where we’ve been, including our past goals and successful (and not so successful) programs, and begin planning for the coming year.

First a little look backwards. I’d like recognize a few members:

Andy HinckOur former Ride Committee Chairman not only did a great job of scheduling the rides for the past two years,  but also served as ride leader for an extraordinary number of them.

Tony Beauford, VP of Membership, and Jeanette Burris, Treasuer: Two long-time officers who quietly serve the club “under-the-radar” so to speak. Both administer their vital duties extremely well and I look forward to their experienced leadership and continuity.

Kelly Siles: Our new Executive VP has served as the head of the Rider Education Series, a position she will relinquish as she assumes her new duties.

Cliff Hickel: A former Past President (and by implication, President) who has been intimately involved in the club for many years. I have gotten to know and work with Cliff for the past three years and I’m sure I’m only aware of a fraction of the areas in which he's been involved. Cliff will continue to serve the club as head of the Rider Education Series, as a ride starter, as a club alternate MPO delegate, and a gazillion other things.

Anytime you acknowledge specific people you run the risk of failing to mention other much-involved and appreciated folks who rightfully deserve accolades. To all of you who have served the club in the past as ride starters, committee chairs, social organizers, training instructors for RES, merchandise sales, civic representatives and other activities, I wish to thank you on behalf of all members. It is this servant spirit which allows the club to continue to function and to provide the services and resources which so greatly benefits both the club members and the bicycling community at large.

Going forward, the board will meet soon to map out the future plans for the club and, as always, we turn to you, the members, for help and input. The San Antonio Wheelmen exists to serve the interests of its members as well as the community. As members ourselves, we on the board have ideas we’d like to see implemented, but we are interested in seeing the broader perspective of a large number of the members. So please send your ideas, concerns, and questions to me.

Beginning in January, the board meetings will be held the last Thursday of the month at EZ’s Restaurant at 281 & Bitters starting at 6:30 PM. Please note that this is a departure from the past Monday evening meetings. Agendas will be published on the club’s website in advance.  All members are welcome to attend.
