REGISTRARS PARLEY
On Wednesday 17 th of December, 2014, we had the last face-to-face meeting/discussions of 2014 with NiRA Accredited Registrars. It was an educative, enlightening session with our Registrars, everyone bringing forth their expertise and experiences of the domain name business. Whilst some Registrars joined online, we had quite a number of Registrars and NiRA Executive Board members physically present at NiRA Office Complex, the venue for the meeting.
It was an interesting session and these are interesting times for the .ng business as we continue to marshal out plans for the growth of the .ng National resource, adapt and remain always adaptable, motivated and responsive and open to ideas.
I have no doubt in my mind that NIRA is destined for greater heights. The domain name business is growing and spreading. From January 2014 to 17 th December 2014, there are 18,236 (Eighteen Thousand, Two Hundred and Thirty Six) registered domain names, with 11,546 (Eleven Thousand Five Hundred and Forty Six) renewed domain names and 746 (Seven Hundred and Forty Six) domain names transferred amongst Registrars. We must commend the efforts of our Registrars. We must appreciate our Registrants.
The meeting deliberated on the various challenges and our aspirations of moving .ng forward and how we could adapt to global trends in the domain name business. We must accept that there are challenges out there and must commend our Registrars for the efforts and results.
Collectively we are transforming the way we operate, to continuously improve our ability to grow our National resource, to ensure growth of the .ng business. We continue to meet challenges and to excel despite setbacks. We should all be proud of where we are today and excited about where we are headed.
We thank everyone for attending and bringing your expertise to bear at the meeting; we also thank our Registrars who could not make it to the meeting. We thank all who made contributions and those who are yet to make their contributions. We appreciate all. It’s with our collective vision, knowledge, the wherewithal and experience of all that the .ng business continues to grow.
We need all to continue to stay engaged and help shape the future of the .ng business.
We can’t deny the fact that our registrars have done well these years, but we can always do better.

LAUNCH OF THE IMPLEMENTATION ADVISORY GROUP TO REVIEW EXISTING ICANN PROCEDURE FOR HANDLING WHOIS CONFLICTS WITH PRIVACYLAW
On the 12th December 2014, ICANN announced the launch of the Implementation Advisory Group to Review the Existing ICANN Procedure for Handling WHOIS Conflicts with Privacy Law (IAG-WHOIS Conflicts).
IAG-WHOIS Conflicts is an open group convened to serve for a limited duration and scope, focusing exclusively on evaluating the ICANN Procedure for Handling WHOIS Conflicts with Privacy Law and providing recommendations on possible changes to the Procedure to the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO.)
Seun Ojedeji is amongst the sixty-one (61) individuals who responded to the Call for Volunteers. Seun Ojedeji, is an ISOC Next Generation Leader and Vice Vice President of OSFON (Open Source Foundation of Nigeria).
The IAG-WHOIS Conflicts is expected to commence its work in January 2015 and produce its recommendations by June 2015. A kick-off conference call will be scheduled for 7 January 2015.

MY NIRA REVELATION - By Ogbajie Celestine Chuks
In the 42nd Edition of NiRA eNewsletter, we had written of NIRA and IXPN hosting Students on Academic Visit from Federal University, Dutsin-MA, Katsina State on Wednesday 29th October 2014. These were 300 Level students of both Mathematics and Computer Science and IT Programmes on academic visit from Federal University, Dutsin-MA, Katsina State. The visit was part of their compulsory academic programme called “Lab Field work for Mathematical Sciences/Computers I”, to blend their theoretical knowledge with what is obtainable in the industry/field.
To encourage the students, we had promised to print three of the best stories based on their experiences of their visit and equally give them a token for their efforts. The three best stories were received from Professor Johnson O. Fatokun, the Dean Faculty of Science and Education.
“My NiRA Revelation” by Ogbajie Celestine Chuks would be the first of the stories based on their experiences.
It was a long path, the journey all the way from Dutsin-ma, a remote town in Katsina state, north-west region of Nigeria to Lagos, the commercial hub of the country. Though the journey was long, the experience, despite short, was knowledge-packed, interesting and of course an eye-opener. |
We (the students of the department of mathematical science and IT, Federal University, Dutsin-ma, Katsina State) set out for Lagos on the 28th day of October, 2014 on a field trip as part of the requirements for participation in the course “Lab Field Work For Mathematical Sciences”. We arrived Lagos in the very early hours of Wednesday 29th, October 2014 and later in the day left for Victoria Island on a visitation to the office of the Internet eXchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), partners of Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA).
On getting to the IXPN office, we were welcomed by both IXPN and NIRA officials (partnership even in hospitality!). After the lecture by IXPN officials, including the C.E.O, Muhammed Rudman, we were honoured by the presence of Mrs Edith Udeagu, Chief Operating Officer NIRA, a woman of resource and of great intellect. Though her speech was brief, her words showed that the NIRA ship is being captained by the right people and would sure be on course towards attaining her vision and mission.
However, at this point, most of us (if not all), still had these questions lurking in our minds: WHAT REALLY IS NIRA? And WHAT DOES NIRA DO?

SIGHTS AND SCENES FROM ENIGERIA 2014
eNigeria 2014, which held in Abuja from the 18th to 20th November 2014 was a big success. The objective of the submit as listed on the eNigeria website were
- Identify tech start-ups as well as ICT related Research and Innovations and showcase them at international exhibitions like CeBIT, GITEX, CES amongst others;
- Groom young innovators in the ICT sector and expose them to investment opportunities while protecting their intellectual properties;
- Enforce policies targeted at improving the qualities of the indigenous ICT products and services for global competitiveness;
- Explore strategies for providing critical mass of employment through ideas, innovations and investment opportunities
- Create one of the world’s most innovative and talented work-force through Nigerian content and entrepreneurial development.

The Plenary sessions focused on the theme for this year’s event “CREATING MARKET OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDIGENOUS ICT PRODUCTS AND SERVICES”.
For us at NiRA, we were quite pleased to receive Dr. (Mrs) Omobola Johnson, the Minister of Communication and Technology along with her entourage at ever busy NIRA booth. The President NiRA, Mrs. Mary Uduma, was at hand to receive the Honurable Minister and her entourage.
NiRA had invited its accredited Registrars to share its booth, to create avenues for registrants for immediate domain name registration. The Accredited Registrar at NiRA booth during eNigeria 2014 was able to register about 20 domain names from some visitors to the booth and had received promises of more registration after the event. The Registrar was able to reach out to those who visited the booth, giving their flyers and showcasing the domain name business. We hope that in future more Accredited Registrars would join NiRA at its booth during exhibitions.
