HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!

FAREWELL TO BORIS
After seven years of dedication to Nereid Boat Club and rowers of all ages, Head Coach Boris Roque Alvarez will be leaving at the end of the year. Boris brought tremendous expertise and passion to all aspects of his work, overseeing the growth of the junior program from a small number of rowers to a bustling program with as many as 100 athletes per season. Deeply committed to young rowers, he guided both girls and boys to excellence in US national races and victories at prestigious regattas such as the Stotesbury Cup. He was also a great coach and rowing buddy to countless masters’ rowers. On behalf of Nereid’s board, we wish him well in his new coaching endeavors. Boris will be missed--but he will always be part of the Nereid family.

While it will be very difficult to fill Boris’ shoes (and straw hat!) the board has already initiated a wide search for a new head coach who will continue and build upon Nereid’s winning program. Please feel free to refer qualified candidates to President Glenn Gero at njnaturaldoc@aol.com.

NEW BOARD MEMBERS, PROGRAM DIRECTOR
Nereid stalwarts Bob Farkas and Julian Canha were appointed to Nereid’s board of directors at the December meeting. Known for long rows and excellent photography, Bob has been a Nereid member for several years. Julian, who grew up rowing and competing at Nereid, is taking on the role of program director, effective immediately. His extensive coaching experience and enthusiasm will be a huge asset during the transition of in the coaching staff. Congrats Bob and Julian and thanks for your service!

DERIG+ROW SATURDAY
Feel the frost and enjoy holiday cheer at the club on Saturday, December 20 at a 9 am row and 11 am winterizing party. A good number of volunteers are needed to help move docks, de-rig boats and otherwise prepare the house for Old Man Winter. Warm beverages and treats will be available. Please join in the fun and do one more good deed for the club before year’s end. Members with private boats should have their shells de- rigged no later than the morning of the 20th; riggers and seats should be taken home.

ANNUAL APPEAL
If you can squeeze a bit more out of your 2014 budget, please consider a tax-deductible donation to Nereid. Over the last two years, we’ve raised 85 percent of our $50,000 fundraising goal, and we’re looking for help now in closing the gap! The club would greatly appreciate a donation or brick purchases. To purchase a brick, click here. Contributions by check can be made out to Nereid Boat Club and sent to PO Box 1678, Rutherford, NJ, 07070. We intend to put these dollars into the boats & equipment fund, which currently has a wish list of items ranging from a mid-weight quad to new shoes, ergs and club oars. Thanks in advance for your generosity!

WEB GURU WANTED
We are looking for a website editor to help manage www.nereidbc.org. The main task involves updating content but could involve some re-design work in the future. Time commitment ranges from 2-4 hours monthly at the beginning of each season and 1 hour monthly at other times. If you can help out, please contact board president Glenn Gero at njnaturaldoc@aol.com. Thanks!
