EMPOWERING CARERS THROUGH KNOWLEDGE, SUPPORT & ADVOCACY

The holidays are approaching fast and I would love to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a relaxing and peaceful Christmas and New Year!

November was a fantastic month for the Association!
Foster and Kinship Carer Excellence recognition Awards were held in all regions, with the Minister for Children & Families personally hosting an awards ceremony in Alice Springs and Darwin.  It was fantastic to see carers recognised for their enormous contribution to the community and the role they play in caring for children. I was very proud to be a part of these ceremonies.

A delegation of carers and staff attended the National Foster and Kinship Care Conference in Hobart Tasmania this year providing an opportunity to network with other carers, learn from the presenters and be inspired from the mentors who shared their knowledge at the Conference.

Each year at the National Conference, the Chair and I meet with the executives each state and territory at a meeting of the Australian Foster & Kinship Care Partnership (AFKCP).  This National body ensures each state and territory is represented at a National level.  This year, I (on behalf of Foster Carers Association NT) was voted into the Vice Chair position.  I am very excited that the work we are doing in the Northern Territory has been recognised and valued in this way and look forward to representing the Territory well in this role.

Christmas is around the corner and with the school holidays coming up most people are sure to be travelling and enjoying the fun over the 'silly season'.  Whatever you do, be safe!

On behalf of the staff and Board of Foster Carers Association NT we would like to wish you a
wonderful Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

Goodbye Dr Howard Bath

It was a sad farewell when friends and colleagues gathered this week to wish Dr Howard Bath, well. After more than 6 years in the role, Northern Territory’s first Children’s Commissioner is planning to spend more time with his family.

Dr Bath has worked tirelessly to ‘make a difference’ for children in the Territory and will be greatly missed.

The Office of the Children’s Commissioner remains open and will welcome a new Commissioner into the role in the near future.  They can be contacted on 8999 6065

Merry Christmas Carers!
It’s come around so fast again.

I hope all carers can afford themselves a present this year and take some time to practice a good dose of self-care.

Treat yourself to some luxurious time to remind yourself you are worth caring for. You’ll be surprised the difference with a spring in your step can make in boosting your energy and motivation when you’ve had a bumpy ride.

We know that acknowledgement and recognition can be scarce for carers so on my behalf please take some time also to reflect on your year.
  • What you have achieved and supported the children and young people you care for to achieve?
  • What do you look back and feel good about doing in 2014, the differences you made, that can remind you why you care and envision the way you would like to progress in 2015?
Attending the Annual Carers Conference last month in Tasmania gave me a boost that I needed in my role supporting and advocating with carers in the NT.

One of the most important things I took away from the conference was the clear evidence of an NT spirit that our carers possess that is unique to us Territorians.

A great group of carers and staff attended the conference in Tasmania.

Despite the challenges we face in the NT (which are sometimes unique, but often similar across Australia), we laugh loud, love with passion and celebrate likes it’s Christmas every day we can.

I am currently working on the Annual Plan for events and training in Darwin for 2015.

Some of the proposed Training and Workshop ideas are Strategies for Healing Trauma, Keeping Kids Culturally Connected, Vicarious Trauma and Self Care for Carers, and NT Carer Rights and Responsibilities.

In terms of events we are planning larger 'get togethers' and more family style activities where kids and carers can connect and develop carer support networks and build stronger relationships, as well as get to know us at Foster Carers Association NT.

Please let me know your thoughts. You know we love to hear from you! I look forward to working with you all in 2015 and on behalf of myself thank-you for a great 2014.

The 2015 National Foster & Kinship Care Conference in Hobart Tasmania

Gregory Nicolau, the Director and consultant Psychologist of Australian Childhood Trauma Group gave a great presentation on trauma and the developing brain at the National Foster and Kinship Care Conference.

Lucja and Catherine made sure they had their photo taken with him.

Social Networking Group event.
Gillen Club on 13th November 2014.

Four foster carers, five children and Southern Region Advocate Rosalyn Havard attended the Delegates  get together held last Thursday night at the Gillen Club in Alice Springs. It was a good opportunity to relax and enjoy a meal together.

As the next few months will include many events (school break ups and various concerts, school holidays and Christmas) that require commitments from foster carers time, the next Delegate event will not be held until the new year. I will advise through our newsletter of the date in February 2015.

December, unbelievable that 2014 almost comes to an end! It was such an amazing and exciting  year for our Association.

Last month together with our Team, I  attended the 2014 National Foster & Kinship Care Conference “Together we can only get better” in Tasmania. This year’s conference focused on producing better outcomes for children and young people by sharing the care together.

By working together and building strong supportive care teams we enhance the sharing of knowledge, skills and best practice thereby achieving stronger outcomes for children in care.

I would like to share with some useful conference research presented by Marilyn McHugh which I found interesting, Marilyn discussed the Best Practice to Support Stability in Placements being (research based):

  • Developing positive relationships, “how we can do it better”
  • Good relationships come from good communication & shared decision making when, workers engage with, & listen to, children, parents & carers
  • Workers should not allow ‘rules’ to get in the way of good communication, maintaining confidentiality is important but
  • do not allow ‘rules’ and ‘systems’ as an excuse to keep people uninformed
  • Developing a relationship with the child and encouraging open communication and a sense of permanence for both children and carers. (Best practice is also) minimal placement changes, offering support through their time in care, helping young people to develop the necessary skills and values and ensuring a strong sense of identity.

  • (ref. Presenter details: Marilyn McHugh, Social Policy Research Centre, University of New South Wales, An exploratory study of risks for stability in foster and kinship care in NSW).
Please contact us if you would like some of the educational materials from the Conference; we would be glad to share them with you!

Youth Events Training

The LAUNCH Youth Events Training is an annual program run in partnership with the Darwin arts community.

A small group of young people each year undertake:
  • A 5 week training program, learning the basics of events management, planning, programming, marketing, basic lighting and sound training
  • A 4 week program in which the group breaks into pairs and focuses on specific areas of an event, working with an industry mentor in Technical Production, Programming or Marketing/Audience Development
  • Mentorships with another industry professional each, to provide insight into the industry and provide support outside of the event training hours
  • Designing, building and rolling out LAUNCH @ National Youth Week, a multi-arts festival by young people for young people
Darwin’s Youth Week is a program of arts, cultural and recreational activities for young people. It showcases the talent and interests of young people in Darwin and aims to provide significant opportunities for young people to develop and present their ideas through a variety of different activities and forums.
