How Nuyorican brothers and their team created a community with inspiration and style in a Brooklyn backyard
About four years ago, I took the L train to Williamsburg and stepped into the Makossa Brooklyn Cookout for the first time. I maintained my cool, even though I was excited to finally make my way to this “day party,†which at the time was hosted in the backyard of a cool concept boutique and gallery called Fresthetic. A few days before the event, I downloaded the Makossa Mixtape Vol. 1, mixed and mastered by the creator of the Makossa event, DJ Wonway Posibul of San Francisco. A seamless blend of boogaloo, classic R&B, old school salsa hits and new age melodies, the playlist was the perfect warm-up to the summer event series. When I arrived at the Cookout, I found soul music that spanned the globe, good people and good food to fill the belly. The ambiance of the festivities truly embodied the up-beat, free-flowing vibes of the mixtape. Just as cultured and cool as the event itself are the people behind it....
