International Volunteer Day Celebration
On Friday, December 5, the Region of Peel community were invited to join in on the celebration of International Volunteer Day (IVD) at Volunteer MBC’s Annual Holiday Open House.
International Volunteer Day (IVD), as declared by the United Nations General Assembly, is a day that celebrates the efforts of those who have made an important contribution to society by giving their time as volunteers.
This year’s event theme was “Show Us YOU Care†which also served as the launch of Volunteer MBC’s Holiday Giving Campaign.
Special thanks goes to all of the volunteers who supported the planning and coordination of the event, including the centre’s event sponsor Scotiabank - Orangeville who generously matched all donations raised at the event.
Photos of the event can be viewed at:

How to volunteer over the Christmas break
By Craig and Marc Kielburger
Source: Canadian Living Magazine (www.canadianliving.com)
Spread some joy and share your generosity with charitable causes and neighbours this holiday season. Whether it's volunteering your time, donating money or offering gently used goods, there are plenty of great ways to make giving a regular part of your lifestyle.
The holiday season is undoubtedly the most festive and indulgent time of year. Our neighbourhoods become winter wonderlands, we adorn our homes with colourful lights and even our crankiest neighbours are suddenly cheery. December is invariably filled with intense shopping excursions and celebrations with family and friends.
Amid the frenzy, we uphold generosity as a defining theme of the holiday season. We even sing carols about good will, but does it extend beyond material gestures? We often need to remind ourselves that it's not how much we give to charitable causes, but the true meaning of a gift that gives it value.
There's a reason we'll never forget what it means to give.
The ultimate lesson about the power of giving
Once, during a trip to the city of Salvador in Brazil, I received the ultimate lesson about the power of giving. I met a young boy named Jose, whose job was to shine shoes on the side of the street. After speaking with him and gaining his trust, Jose brought me back to his home -- a bus shelter that he shared with other street children. They had very little in the way of material possessions, but they did have each other.
The kids asked me if I wanted to play a soccer game with them. With no shoes on their feet and using a plastic water bottle as a ball, we played for hours until exhaustion finally set in.
