If I knew 10 years ago what I know now...
As I reflect on the past 10 years of service with Wycliffe Bible Translators, I’m in awe of God’s faithfulness. Every year has brought indescrible life experiences and valuable lessons. Here are just a few...
- Delaware: Began support raising while teaching 6th-8th grade. My last full year with my immediate family. Lesson #1: Family is forever - be with them whenever you can. Do not take them for granted.
- South Asia - Lived the dream, traversing through mountains and valleys, recording and sharing Bible stories with the Kahani people. Lesson #2: If you have an opportunity to serve overseas, go and do it! Now!
- In spite of conflicts with my colleague (the only other foreigner for hundreds of miles), we both learned over 2 years that we NEED each other. Lesson #3: Successful partnership takes work. Don’t give up.
- U.S.A: Spent 9 months sharing my experiences in colleges and churchgroups, challenging everyone to go, and do now! Lesson #4: Always be ready to tell your story to others.
- South Asia - coached 24 national storytellers in Bible storytelling work. Lesson #5: Reading the entire Bible chonologically in 6 months will help you survive an insanely challenging assignment.
- Worked 14+ hours/day, 6 days/week or more. Lesson #6: I am not the Savior of the world. I cannot do everything for everyone all the time, not even unreached people groups. God can and will reach people Himself - He has not called me to burn out in the process.
- U.S.A./South Asia: - Many trips overseas to train storytellers. Lesson #8: Learn how to travel with just a carry-on for any length of trip.
- More overseas trips (mostly alone) for training and consulting of national storytellers. Lesson #7: Travel is thrilling. Travel is disruptive to ‘normal life.’ Travel is draining.
