Raging Dragons 2014

Rage Christmas special

Rage Christmas special

Wrapping up the season

Festive Ragers
Sunday 21st December marked the last training session of 2014.

The coaches were pleased to see a good 20 names down for attendance. Sadly, a few fallen comrades fell victim to alcohol, general over-indulgence, last minute Christmas shopping and failed alarms.

Not to worry...our remaining army of Santas, elves, reindeer and I'm-not-sure-whats made it, and clamoured aboard our boat to face the elements and an upcoming surprise :)

A sight to behold

Admittedly it was a tad windy and a bit of sunshine would've been nice, but nothing was going to stand in the way of Rage and our end of year festivities...

Warm up involved a clumsy team run/waddle up to the end of the dock area and back in Santa suits, green elf outfits, various reindeer accessories and the audible ringing of dangling bells.

On their return, our unsuspecting team mates received an announcement: there was to be a regular set of drills dished out for the first half of training, followed by a 'Rage Christmas special'....
Can't see over that hat...

The fun begins

Some technique work and a few of our regular exercises to start...before our first targets were summoned:

"Alright Jam, up the back you go..."

Jam (like a kid in trouble): "What....why???" ...
"You're helming...!!"  (Yup, that's right...come on down, baby!!! Haha!!)
And "Richard Marfiak...stand up...you're coaching!"
Rich: "Whaaaat??"

And so, with these two champs, our Rage Christmas special kicked off, and the standards were set. Jam was a star student at the helm (coolly doing the job like a pro in his bare feet and signature smile), while Rich carried out his coaching duties with the style and charisma we knew he would deliver :)

Next up, Amit made his way to the back with a Santa beard on his face – though after being advised that as a helm he may 'want to be able to see where he was going', the beard came off. Parts of the helming lesson seemed lost in translation for a while ("pull" was interpreted as "push", "right foot" was left foot etc...but after Jen's initial series of minor heart attacks as helm supervisor, all settled and Amit did a stellar job :)

Meanwhile at the front, Connie the elf used her paddle as a walking/standing stick for balance (as Vic also clutched on to her life jacket from behind). Her teacher persona ensured she was heard. All her good little Rage students were very cooperative. And with that, another pair of Ragers survived their Christmas initiation :)

Next!! Andrew Gaydon (tallest helm of the day) and Fernando (joker of the year).

Andrew was great at taking instructions, and seemed pretty relaxed at the back of the boat. Cool as a cucumber...not much further instruction needed really (see below)!

Meanwhile, Fernando enjoyed his rise to power at the front of the boat: "okay team...100%...until 1 o'clock!!!" (about an hour and a half away!) To be fair though, he showed no favouritism towards himself: "Fernando, twist!!" :D  And apart from his entertainment value, Fernando was also quite encouraging throughout the half boat/full boat exercise :)
Keeping it cool

Sharyl up the back next with Jen. A momentary slip of her footing did raise her anxiety levels a bit. Good girl though – she got back up on her feet and before she knew it, she was doing it – she was helming! :)

At the front of the boat, Will Ip received coaching mentoring from Vic who told him to "say it seriously!" So he put on his best 'manly Will' voice and delivered his pyramid drill with solid results. Well done, Will and Sharyl! ;)

Almost done now. A very square looking Santa Kev pottered his way up the back, while Row and Vic performed a scene from 'Titanic' at the front of the boat. Row ran through some pause paddling and kept it short and snappy so we could all go home.

Only Reds left to go – though he's helmed before, so not much of a novelty...we might have to think of something more testing to put you through next time...same with Dave :)

A quick team warm down followed before we made our way to Christmas team lunch.

Thanks to Connie for organising the get together – and for managing (in true Asian style), to also secure us a 10% discount :D
The girls

Thank you and Merry Christmas!

We hope those of you who turned up to training enjoyed the surprise – it was intended as a memorable way to end the year and designed to keep you on your toes :)

The coaches would like to thank everyone for their hard work and dedication this season. Congratulations and well done for getting us to the top of the National Standard League. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy healthy 2015. Enjoy your holidays – and we'll see you all in the new year.

Warm regards,

Jen and Vic, xx.
