Chemistry for the Future of Europe
During two days, in Rome, the conference “Chemistry for the Future of Europe - Energy, Food, Environment” highlighted the role of chemistry in providing solutions to today´s biggest societal challenges. During this conference, co-organised by EuCheMS, the Società Chimica Italiana and the Consiglio Nazionale dei Chimici, several lectures and round tables discussed topics such as solar energy conversion to more usable forms, alternatives in energy storage and distribution, water usage and treatment and the importance of proper use of analytical methods in the analysis of food and food supplements.
After the conference a debriefing session with a special focus on Horizon 2020 and on the chemical risk in waste management took place at the Italian senate.

A First Look at the European Survey on the Employability of Chemists
The Workshop on the Employability of Chemists, which took place on the 12th of December in Brussels, explored the current labour market challenges presented to European chemists. EuCheMS President opened this event by giving some pointers on how a good chemist can get a good placement on the labour market. Other highlight from this event was the first look at the European Survey on the Employability of Chemists, presented by Prof. Reiner Salzer. This conference was co-organised by the European Commission´s Joint Research Centre, EuCheMS and the European Chemistry Thematic Network Association and was followed by the 2014 graduation ceremony of the Euromaster on Measurement Science in Chemistry.

Three Pillars for Disruptive Innovation for Europe
At the 6th European Innovation Summit, Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation Carlos Moedas conveyed his will to grow an innovation-responsive society in Europe, an environment conducive to disruptive innovation. According to Commissioner Moedas this innovation should be based on three distinct pillars: 1) adequate public and private funding of research, development and innovation; 2) a unified research area, open to the world, with firm foundations in the Internal Market; and 3) a market environment quick to respond to innovation, supporting new ideas and creating entirely new markets and transforming existing ones, through disruptive innovation.

New Online Tool Providing Chemical Information
ChemAgora, a new chemical information portal launched by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, will make life easier for everybody who is looking for information available online on a certain chemical substance. Chemicals can be searched by their name, CAS Registry Number, InChIKey or chemical structure (by drawing the molecule in an appropriate editor).

EU Companies Must Boost R&D Investment to Stay Globally Competitive
The European Commission has recently issued the latest edition of the EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard. This scoreboard shows that investment in research and development by companies based in the EU grew by 2.6% in 2013, despite the unfavourable economic environment. However, this growth has slowed in comparison to the previous year's 6.8%. EU´s figure is also below the 2013 world average (4.9%), and lags behind companies based in the US (5%) and Japan (5.5%).
