Legislation Permitting Police Use of Video Images From School Buses Introduced at Queen's Park

Rick Nicholls, PC MPP for Chatham-Kent-Essex has introduced a Private Member’s Bill (PMB 50) at Queen’s Park which proposes the use of cameras on school buses to capture video images of motorists illegally passing school buses stopped with their red warning lights flashing.  The video images can be used by police in court as evidence to prosecute owners of offending vehicles rather than the driver.  These cameras, commonly referred to as “stop arm cameras”, have proven effective in other jurisdictions across North America by increasing the prosecution rate and raising awareness of the consequences of breaking the law.

Mr. Nicholls previously met with representatives of the OSBA – Chris Harwood, Jim Switzer and Dave Carroll – before introducing the enabling legislation in the Ontario Legislature.  After the Bill was introduced, OSBA President Les Cross, on behalf of the OSBA membership, sent a letter supporting the principal of the Bill.  PMB 50 was debated in the Legislature on December 11 and passed Second Reading with all party support.  The next step in the Legislative process is clause by clause debate before the Legislative’s Justice Committee. While Private Member’s Bills are not always approved into law, it is worthwhile noting that the Bill was supported by all three political parties. OSBA will track the Bill through Committee hearings whenever it might be called for further debate when the Legislature resumes sittings after mid February, 2015.

Delaney Bus Lines Set to "Stuff-A-Bus" For Families In Need This Holiday Season
Christmas is just around the corner and this year, Delaney Bus Lines is collecting toys, food and/or snowsuits for the local Agapè Centre in Cornwall.  Coined “STUFF-A-BUS,” the goal is to fill a 30-passenger bus with collected items which will be donated to help those in need.

The Agapè Centre was created in 1971 with the simple belief that no man, woman or child should go hungry or without the basic necessities of life.  Agapè means love and serves all people without the preference to colour, race or religion.

Delaney Bus Lines is asking for donations of any kind – large or small, to help them STUFF-A-BUS for this very important cause.
