Public Realm Action Plan Open House 1/7

Join us at Town Hall on January 7th at 5pm! We want your feedback on the open space and street concepts proposed in the First Hill Public Realm Action Plan  to enhance mobility and livability!

First Hill’s growing residential population, cultural institutions, and influx of workers warrants high quality public spaces that meet mobility and recreational needs. The current First Hill neighborhood plan (from 1998) recognizes this need for open space in this bustling, downtown-adjacent neighborhood, but despite efforts to advance this goal, land acquisition has proven to be challenging. For this educational open house, city staff will be present to discuss open space concepts and implementation strategies for these innovative open space proposals. Moving beyond land acquisition, the plan incorporates street spaces and private development to create a greener, more walkable neighborhood.

Presenters include Susan McLaughlin, Urban Designer/Project Manager at Seattle Department of Transportation; Donald Harris and Chip Nevins, Department of Parks & Recreation, Property and Acquisition Services; Lyle Bicknell, Principal Urban Designer with the Department of Planning & Development; and Alex Hudson, Coordinator for the First Hill Improvement Association.

Horiuchi P-Patch Construction Complete!

Horiuchi Park P-Patch is ready for visitors!

Construction wrapped up in December, and though there is still some work to be done, everyone is welcome to go visit the site and enjoy it's stunning views. Take a walk to Boren and Spruce to see the plots, and enjoy this new public open space.

Plot Assignments happen in February, and there are still plots available, but there is much to do! Desired help includes:
  • Tool shed organization. The tool shed lacks shelves and places to hang tools. Design, carpentry skills needed.
  • Tool Shed Access Ramp. The tool shed sits six inches above the gravel path, an easy step, but not so easy for wheelbarrows or people with limited mobility. Design, carpentry and construction skills needed.
  • Accessible Raised Bed Area. An area adjacent to the tool shed is reserved for four accessible raised beds. Construction skills, organizing and purchasing materials needed.
  • Outreach - Outreach - Outreach -- We need help reaching the Yesler Terrace and First Hill community. There are lots of openings!

First Hill Public Meeting 1/20 Community Building and FHIA Board Elections

Join FHIA and your First Hill neighbors for a public meeting on January 20th. This meeting focuses on community building and volunteering in our community.

Organizations based in First Hill will be tabling to talk about they work they do and provide opportunities for you to get involved!

Our keynote speaker, Deputy Mayor Kate Joncas, will speak on the importance of neighborhood groups in creating healthy communities, and the impacts that district-based City Council elections will have on neighborhood groups.

Following her speech FHIA members will vote to elect new FHIA Board members. These volunteers help guide the organization and provide leadership for ongoing issues and developments on First Hill. The Board is comprised of residents, representatives from First Hill businesses and the major institutions. Any FHIA member is eligible to vote in the election.

The meeting is Tuesday, January 20th from 6:00 - 8:00pm at Horizon House, 900 University St.

If you have questions or want more information, contact FHIA Coordinator Alex Hudson at alex@firsthill.org.

The meeting is open to all First Hill residents, workers, and interested parties. So, invite your friends and neighbors! We hope to see you there.
