Research launch
Friday 30th January 9.30am - 12.30pm - the Albany Centre
An important part of the EC project is finding out what third sector organisations in Glasgow are doing to improve the wellbeing of children and families.  We have been conducting extensive research with Third Sector organisations to understand and promote their contribution to improving lives in communities and as part of the planning process of children and young people’s services in the city.  We will be launching the research report along with a draft action plan for the provision of support to third sector organisations who are involved in this work and would like to do more.   More information on the programme will be available early in the new year to book your place visit our website.

Learning lesson 6 - 'keep going it's working'

‘Keep going, it’s working’. That was the key message from Aileen Campbell, Minister for Children and Young People at the sixth Learning Session of the Early Years Collaborative (EYC) recently. Over the two day event, around  700 participants from across all of Scotland’s 32 Community Planning Partnerships and National Partners including public, private and third sector organisations shared learning about how they are applying improvement methodology to improve outcomes in their own local areas.  Read more..

Delivering GIRFEC in partnership; Improving impact through collaboration with the Third Sector

On the 6th February the National Third Sector GIRFEC Project is holding a free one day National Learning Event in Edinburgh - for more details see events below.

The project want to involve people who use services by developing video clips where people can say what communities think of existing services for children and families in their area, what works well or could be improved.  They will ask people what they think are the essential ingredients of effective partnerships between people who provide services and people who use them. They will be filming in early - mid January 2015. Parenting programme boss hits back at 'misleading' claims

Criticism of Triple P, the parenting programme by a professor from Aberdeen University, who claimed that the system was ineffective prompted a defence from the chief executive of the programme who said that the claims made by Phil Wilson were 'misleading'. Read more... 

Childcare costs driving families into poverty

New research from Citizens Advice Scotland has found that the high cost of childcare in Scotland is pushing families into poverty. The report says that more needs to be done to reduce childcare costs and while the Scottish Government has increased the number of hours of free childcare for families, which is welcome, remaining costs are prohibitive, especially for those who work full-time or are on zero hours contracts. Read more...

Top Scottish Private Schools pass 'charity test'

The Scotsman has reported that private schools in Scotland have retained their charity status, which was under threat after accusations that they were too exclusive.

Better care urged for pregnant women with mental health problems

Improvements to the care of pregnant women with mental health problems is urgently required according to a report in the Guardian, as a new study showed that the death rate among such women has remained constant despite an overall fall in maternal deaths.  Read more...

Disabled children and their families forced to go without food

Research by Contact a Family, a charity which supports the families of disabled children has found that disabled children and their families are going without food and heating because of rising bills and cuts to benefits.  The charity is calling for urgent action from the Government and energy firms to address the findings in their Counting the Costs 2014 survey.  Read more...

Parents campaigning for access to free childcare promised to them under a flagship Scottish Government initiative have taken their fight to the country's new First Minister.

Celebrating 25 years of the UNCRC in Scotland  

Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People coordinated celebrations of the UNCRC on its 25th anniversary – 20th November 2014, helping to raise awareness and understanding of children’s rights.

Youth Community Support Agency (YCSA) seeking Board Members

YCSA has been providing support to vulnerable young people from ethnic minority backgrounds across Glasgow for almost 20 years. Last year the organisation supported over 1350 young people with intensive support provided to over 400 young people and their families.  We wish to appoint new Board Members to provide oversight/governance and seek applicants who understand the issues affecting young people, have good independent judgement, and the ability to work as part of a diverse team. Christmas and New Year Celebration in the School of Russian Centre in Scotland “Haven”

A new report launched by Barnardo’s and NSPCC on how prison can impact on pregnancy and babies, and what can be done to help. Read the report….  

Guide to child protection in the arts launched 
A guide on child protection for individuals and organisations involved in delivering artistic, cultural and creative projects for children and young people has been published online. The new publication, Creating Safety, was co-produced by Creative Scotland and Children in Scotland.  Read more...

Draft Secondary Legislation for Parts 9, 10 and 11 of the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014

The Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 was passed by the Scottish Parliament on 19 February 2014, and received Royal Assent on 27 March 2014. The legislation is a key part of the Scottish Government’s strategy for making Scotland the best place in the world to grow up. Draft Ministerial Orders have been published to accompany Parts 9 (Corporate Parenting), 10 (Aftercare) and 11 (Continuing Care) of the Act. There will also be consultation on the draft guidance for each of these Parts of the Act. Consultation deadline: 29 December 2014.

Proposed amendments to the National Health Service Central Register (Scotland) Regulations 2006
The Scottish Government and National Records of Scotland (“NRS”) are undertaking a joint consultation on the proposed amendments to the National Health Service Central Register (Scotland) Regulations 2006. The proposals are to enable certain data contained on the National Health Service Central Register (“the NHSCR”) to be shared with certain named bodies and for the NHSCR to hold additional postcode data.  It is intended that will assist the tracing certain persons, for example, children who are missing within the education system.

Survey of parents’ use of childcare  
The Commission for Childcare Reform is seeking views on what childcare is really like in Scotland and has released a survey to help inform its work.  Find out more and respond to the survey here.

Nuffield Foundation - Research and Innovation Grants 
The Foundation supports charitable and non-profit organisations with creative ideas to identify change or interventions which will have a practical impact for researchers, policy makers, and practitioners. There are currently four grant programmes that support research and innovation for beneficial social change. Grants normally range between £10,000 and £250,000.  Deadline 5th March 2015.  More...
 

Big Launch £30 Million Our Environment Our Future Programme 
The Big Lottery Fund has announced that it is seeking Expression of Interest for its new "Our Environment Our Future programme. This is a new £30 million programme that will support young people (aged 11-24) to improve their local environment. It is expected that the majority of projects to be delivered through local partnerships. Lead partners that can apply for funding include registered charities and not for profit organisations.  Deadline for submitting an Expression of Interest form  17th December 2014.  Find out more...  

Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland:  Henry Duncan Awards  
The programme supports the work of grassroots charities across the country. These awards range from £300 to £7,000 and will be used to deliver work that has a direct impact on the lives of disadvantaged people in communities across Scotland. All the work funded is driven by local need, and will make life better for groups including children with special needs, vulnerable families and adults with learning disabilities.  Next deadline: 12th January 2015 for a decision in April 2015.  More...
   
Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland: The Partnership Drugs Initiative 
There is a two stage application process, and the deadline dates are:
  • Initial - 15th May 2015
  • Full Stage Deadline - 14th August 2015
  • Decision - October 2015

Cashback for Communities Youth Work Fund (Scotland) 

YouthLink Scotland is inviting applications to the CashBack for Communities Youth Work Fund. A total of £600,000 is available. The aim of the fund is to help build the capacity of young people and the youth work organisations who work to support them.  

 Deadline date for receiving applications is: 5.00pm on Friday 19 December 2014 

The Prince's Foundation for Children & the Arts 
Funding to Connect Children with the Arts: Start programme. Start seeks to support cultural venues (e.g. theatres, museums, galleries and orchestras) to enable them to build partnerships with selected primary and secondary schools in their local areas, enabling children to experience the very best of the arts over three years of the project. Children & the Arts will provide financial support to a maximum of £15,000 per project per year in years one and two, and a maximum of £10,500 in year three. Deadline for applications is 5pm on the 30th January 2015.  Read more...
 
MacRobert Trust Grants Programme 
The MacRobert Trust makes grants in the areas of Services and Sea; Education and Training; Children and Youth; Science, Engineering and Technology; Agriculture and Horticulture. Grants can range between £5,000 and £25,000 and occasionally the Trustees make a recurring grant of up to three years. In addition a small grants programme facilitates awards of up to £5,000.  Deadline is the 31st May 2015.  More info...

Everyone's Children Project Training

The Everyone’s Children Training programme is offered to third sector organisations operating in Glasgow.   These sessions  provide a policy and practice context for key third sector roles  in implementing the Getting It Right For Every Child programme which promotes the wellbeing of children, young people and families in their families and communities. It will also encourage the sharing of views and experiences with colleagues and support the developing of useful networks around the work as the GIRFEC approach becomes more prominent in the delivery of services in Glasgow.

A public policy researcher well known for her research on the value of unpaid work her book: Counting for Nothing: what men value and what women are worth has had world wide impact. National Third Sector GIRFEC Project Learning Event
Friday 6th February 2015 from 9:15am - 4.00pm

The National Third Sector GIRFEC Project is holding a one day National Learning Event to explore the theme of partnership, share the learning from their work to date in the demonstration sites and explore the implications of the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 on how we plan and deliver services across Scotland in future.

The event will include:
  • High-profile speakers from a range of organisations involved in the planning and delivery of Children’s Services;
  • An opportunity to learn more about the work of the National Third Sector GIRFEC Project;
  • A chance to network and share with colleagues from across Scotland.
