As 2014 comes to a close, the Staff at ʻUluʻulu would like to wish you all a Happy Holiday Season and share some of our accomplishments from the past year!
We would also like to express our thanks to each and every one of you for your help, contribution, guidance and support. You have made the difference! This moving image archive has been a dream to generations of librarians, archivists and filmmakers and since 2012, ʻUluʻulu has had a permanent home located in the library of the University of Hawaiʻi at West Oʻahu in Kapolei. Our gratitude to the Governor of Hawaiʻi and the State Legislature for their foresight in laying the foundation for this moving image archive.
2014 has been an amazing year! At ʻUluʻulu we are proud of what we do and what we have been able to accomplish. It is indeed a kākou effort and everyday we are grateful for the honor of caring for our moving image history.

New Acquisitions and Collections

Interview with Harriet Ne (Na Manao o Na Kupuna Collection)
|
|
We welcomed several new collections this year, including:
Na Manao o Na Kupuna Collection
This collection contains videotaped interviews with kupuna from Molokai conducted in the 1970s by Mike Dooley and Harry James Mowat as part of the project “Na Manao o na Kupuna: An oral history of Hawaii”.
Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) Collection
This collection contains the full run of The Electric Kitchen television series (1994-2005). The show, hosted by Allison Zecha, featured energy tips as well as cooking demonstrations of local recipes by HECO employees and Hawaiʻi-based chefs who appeared as guests.
Patricia Gillespie Collection
This collection includes work related to Kamehameha Schools Video Productions classes taught by Patricia Gillespie and production materials related to Gillespie's community theater work in Hawaiʻi.

Naomi Sodetani Collection
This collection documents the start of the construction of H-3 and the protests carried out during this period.
|
|
|
Mandy Blake Bowers Collection
A retired librarian and close personal friend of the late Irmgard Aluli, Ms. Bowers produced programs about Irmgard Aluli for ʻOLELO Television.
Protect Kahoʻolawe ʻOhana Collection
Davianna McGregor and Dr. Emmett Aluli delivered this amazing collection of raw footage, edited materials and documents related to the activities of the PKO circa 1970s-1990s.

This contains video related to the Polynesian Voyaging Society and the Hōkūleʻa, and includes raw footage used in the KGMB programs Hōkūleʻa: Proud Voyage Home; Hōkūleʻa: Return to Tahiti; Hōkūleʻa: In the Path of the Ancients; and Hōkūleʻa: The Rediscovery Begins.
Daniel K. Inouye Congressional Collection
In partnership with the Library of Congress and the UH Manoa Libraries, we acquired the video and audio recordings from the Washington D.C. Congressional offices of Daniel K. Inouye starting from the beginning of his career. Many thanks to Irene Inouye, the Senator’s son Ken and his Chief of Staff Jennifer Sabas for their help in organizing this important collection.

Digital Preservation
In 2014, we digitized over 230 hours of videotape and film footage. This is more than twice as much as last year! We are so grateful to the Daniel K. Inouye Institute and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs for their continued support, without which this would not have been possible.

We don’t just collect footage – we make it accessible to the public. So how have our collections been used you may ask? We have several examples:
- Filmmaker Ty Sanga, who recently directed a documentary on Myron “Pinky” Thompson called Visions in the Dark: The Life of Pinky Thompson, spent hours researching footage in the KGMB, Victoria Keith Productions, Juniroa Productions, and KITV collections;
- Footage from the Lyman Museum and Mission House collection was heavily used this year - here are 2 examples: 1) The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum used footage of an Inter-Island Airways flight in a new "Hawaii by Air" exhibit, and 2) UH Hilo's Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes indexed and used multiple videos on their educational YouTube channel;
- Footage from the KGMB collection was researched and used in "Perry and Price: Voices of Hawaii", a special on the morning radio duo which premiered on October 12th on KHNL;
- Finally and most recently, students are now researching the life of Senator Inouye and other Hawaiʻi leaders in our collections for their Hawaiʻi History Day projects.

In November, YouTube sensation AJ Rafael presented and performed in our exhibit area as part of the Creative Media Master Series hosted by the UHWO Academy for Creative Media.

We have been busy in Kapolei archiving a new educational resource but we have also set aside time for our own personal development and professional presentations. Staff have been involved throughout the year participating and presenting at a variety of conferences and events.

We were fortunate to again participate in the Hawaii International Film Festival. This year, we featured a pair of recently preserved and digitized films from the Friends of ʻIolani Palace Collection - ʻIolani Palace: Hawaii's Past Today and ʻIolani Palace Restoration directed by George Tahara. The screening was well attended and the panel discussion held afterwards was engaging as audience members had many questions and stories to share. Read more...

Looking forward to 2015
Here are just a few highlights of what we are continuing to work on this upcoming year.
- Our first born-digital acquisition! We launched a new Pilot Project, this time to determine the most efficient process for collecting and preserving born-digital video.
- Internships - We were lucky to have 4 interns during 2014 - Peter Kowen, Ofa Tauane (UHWO Senior Practicum), Jonah Dias, and Keahiahi Long (Dance Heritage Coalition Fellow; UHM Library & Information Science Intern). Internships and Senior Practicums for academic credit are available for 2015!
- Class instruction - In 2014, we collaborated with UHWO Librarians to provide class instruction sessions to English, Sociology, Anthropology, History, Pacific Island Studies and Psychology classes at UHWO. - In celebration of Hōkūleʻa's 40th birthday this coming March, we will be hosting an event to honor her and the Polynesian Voyaging Society. Stay tuned for more details!
