A Big Thank You for All Your Support in 2014

In 2014, Emergency Food Network and our partner programs responded to greater numbers of individuals and families seeking more food than ever before. The number of total visits to area food programs in 2014 reached 1,417,697, an increase of nearly 13,000 visits compared to 2013.

Thank you to all those who helped EFN provide food for these hungry families and individuals in 2014. Your support is invaluable.

A Note from Emergency Food Network's Mother Earth Farm

Mother Earth Farm is wrapped up snug in a blanket of cover crop, mulch straw, and burlap, awaiting the start of spring and our crew from the Washington Corrections Center for Women.

We're not waiting patiently, however - for the first winter in its history, Mother Earth Farm is continuing to give freshly harvested organic produce each week to a limited number of food banks. Crops that will make it through this wet Western Washington season include kale, carrots, parsnips, spinach, and a few other green treats. We'll keep on growing all the way through the year!

Goodbye to Jeff Klein & Canyon Little

Last month we said goodbye to our Development Director, Jeff Klein, and Farm Manager, Canyon Little.

During Jeff's 6 years at Emergency Food Network, he helped increase food distribution for families and individuals in need by 69%. Jeff’s dedication to EFN, and his humor, will be missed but we wish him well as he embarks on his new adventure as the Executive Director at South Sound Outreach.

During Canyon's 5 years at EFN's Mother Earth Farm, he helped distribute more than 621,000 pounds of fresh produce to people in need through our partner programs. We wish Canyon the best on his future endeavors.

Volunteers of the Month

Retha Hayward & Leslie Cummings

Leslie Cummings (left) and Retha Hayward (right)
This past year, two of EFN’s volunteers have gone above and beyond in donating their time, talent and treasure. Retha Hayward and Leslie Cummings have volunteered with EFN for many years. The work they do for Empty Bowls and Abundance is invaluable. They have also been known to tell anyone who will listen about EFN’s mission and upcoming events.

When we asked Retha why she volunteers with EFN she said, “EFN’s goal is so terribly important to me because it’s all about the food, efficiency, and effectiveness and it’s all local.” Leslie added, “I didn't live in a world where people were hungry and I don’t want to. We see a problem and we try and fix it because we can.”

Thank you Retha and Leslie for your ongoing support and your commitment in helping us provide food to some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
