2014 in Review
Happy Holidays from PEP
This past year has been a dynamic one for not only the Peace Economy Project, but the St. Louis region as a whole. A new movement was born right in our own backyard this August in Ferguson, MO, prompting the creation of new coalitions and campaigns, including the Don't Shoot Coalition, of which PEP is a part of.
We have been active in addressing the militarization we have seen at home through our involvement with not only in the Don’t Shoot Coalition, but also Drone Free St. Louis. Both groups have a strong focus on keeping weapons of war out of our community, holding the police accountable, and upholding racial and social justice for all.
This past year Drone Free St. Louis was able to successfully keep the proposed police surveillance system, the Real Time Intelligence Center, from being included in a proposed city bond bill. We continue to stand vigilant in ensuring taxpayer dollars aren’t spent on tactics of war like surveillance, drones, tear gas, and tanks in our city.
We also continue to stand up for better budget priorities. The recent spending bill passed last weekend leaves much to be desired, and the Defense budget at new highs. We cannot hope to create a more peaceful world while we continue to fund endless war and pour money into our Pentagon budget, but not into our own communities.
Thank you for your support of PEP's initiatives and projects this past year. We couldn't have done it without you. We look forward to a new year with new challenges and projects that will help moves us closer to a more just and peaceful world.
