Presented by:

The Grande Prairie Sport Council is printing the following correction notice in lieu of misinformation that we distributed in our last e-newsletter. A council meeting was held after the delivery of the letter, and changes to the Northwest Alberta Sport Award Gala were approved.

The Northwest Alberta Sport Excellence Awards, as they will hereafter be known, will be held March 7, 2015 at the Stonebridge Hotel. Nominations for award recipients will be accepted until January 31 of the same year.  Nominated individuals should live within a 100 Km radius of the City of Grande Prairie. This mean the catchment area extends from approximately northwest to Spirit River, east to Debolt and south halfway between Grande Cache and Grovedale.

Face-Off For the Century: One Hundred Years Of Grande Prairie Hockey

By Stan Neufeld

In 2003 the Grande Prairie Hockey Legends Project was born to capture and record the city's rich hockey history by selecting and paying tribute to individuals who have been instrumental in the development of the game of hockey in our community. It is more than just a game; it is a window into the cities social, psychological, cultural and economic fabric. In recognition of the role that hockey has played over the years plans are in place to record the manner in which the sport has evolved during the past century. “Face-Off For The Century” represents the first episode in a series “One Hundred years of Grande Prairie Hockey.” We invite you to follow the series to see how the sport has evolved, how it has influenced and in turn been influenced by the context in which it has flourished.

On January 29th, 2015, Derek Taylor Public School will host their 7th annual Student Convention.  The theme of this years convention is student wellness.  The goals are to build interest in lifelong learning within the students, to introduce them to the organizations & services in our community that support wellness and to raise awareness of the importance of finding balance in life to remain physically, emotionally and mentally healthy. There will be 170 students in Grades 7 & 8 taking part in the full day event and 30 or more speakers are needed to provide numerous opportunities for the students to learn from individuals skilled and more importantly passionate in their specific area.

Derek Taylor invites you speak with their students about your organization, profession, passion, hobby or sport.  You may like to touch on the education or training required and your experiences that led you to pursue your interest in these area.  Your presentation might speak about the types of services and supports that you or your organization offer our community.  Interactive activities that demonstrate skills or allow for student participation are encouraged.  This opportunity not only provides the students a chance to hear from you, but also a chance for you to promote your passion amongst students in our community.
