DECEMBER 2014 NEWSLETTER
In the midst of the holiday bustle...

We will be heading out Saturday morning for our 4th year participating in the Christmas Bird Count, the world’s longest-running Citizen Science survey, in its 115th year! Researchers use the data to study the long-term health and status of bird populations across North America. It’s a wonderful way to slow down for a morning away from the holiday rush- join us at 8am at the 3rd Street entrance!

Those who love history, maps, or both(!) can time-travel through historical maps - we compiled 21 historical maps that encompass the valley that is now Glen Providence Park, starting with 1681 property lines. Or travel back to the winter wonderland we experienced just last year in our Winter 2013-2014 Photojournal - with sledding, valentines(!), snow-covered scenery, and a Bald Eagle!

In some holiday-related articles on our website, you can read "Ebenezer Scroggie" to find out what the park and Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol have in common, and learn about a 1933 skating mishap reminiscent of a scene in It's A Wonderful Life. Then imagine a time before the American Chestnut blight when "chestnuts roasting on an open fire" was more than song lyrics - read about when chestnuts were abundant in the park, and the two surviving American Chestnut trees we found!

There is so much that is enchanting about Glen Providence Park, which makes it rewarding to research, document, and preserve. We are grateful for the donations we have already received for our end-of-year fundraising appeal. We are an all-volunteer non-profit 501c3 organization, so your contributions will go towards our ongoing work to preserve and enhance Glen Providence Park - with concerts, plantings, nature walks, stewardship, and more. You can donate by PayPal, credit card or check to our 2014 Annual Appeal.

We are working on our 2015 Schedule of Events - stay tuned! Follow us on facebook and our website to stay posted, and for occasional snow photos...

Happy Holidays, and Enjoy the Park!
