Our News

December 2014
The good news for the LLENs across the state is that we have been refunded for 2015.

Unfortunately, the funding is not at similar levels to the last 5 years, however the M&MV LLEN will continue to establish the initiatives that are now supporting many young people across our region.

To ensure that we maintain a focus on need, we will be consulting broadly in 2015 with a range of organisations.

Our Work Plan for 2015 will be available on our website early January and your feedback is important. Due to limited time between the announcement of continued funding of LLENs and having to complete the work plan, we have based it on extending our 2014 work.

It is worthwhile noting that DEECD direction to target school Business partnerships, applied learning and careers has also helped shape our work plan for next year.

Questions of Engagement

Questions of Engagement
Improving the learning experience of students in Years 5-8.

Questions of Engagement has completed the first year of the two year project being conducted in the Flemington area by a partnership brokered by M&MVLLEN between 5 schools (3 Primary and 2 Secondary) and Victoria University School of Education (Education and Youth Work faculties). It is based on the premises that student engagement is ‘malleable, namely it is amenable to improvement via pedagogy and other intervention’ (Lawson and Lawson, 2013, and that engagement is multi-dimensional – cognitive, social and behavioural.
The research in 2014 has been shaped in a continual process of consultation with the schools and has included analysis of
  • School data such as NAPLAN, attendance figures, student and parent satisfaction surveys
  • Results of student data collected through the Motivation and Engagement Scale survey tool ( Martin, A.J)
  • Confidential small group interviews with students conducted by VU Pre-Service Students and Youth Work students
This research identified 17 factors that either support or prevent students’ engagement and provides each school with the data indicating which of these factors could be addressed in their school. In 2015 schools will be supported by the partnership to identify,  implement and evaluate strategies to improve engagement in learning.
The Full Report for Questions of Engagement 2014 is now available on our web site www.mmvllen.org.au or electronically from Wendy Pitt  wendypitt@mmvllen.org.au

Moonee Valley Internships

It has been an exciting and challenging first year for the Moonee Valley Internship Project.
The project provides marginalised young people who are interested in working in the Community Sector with a 10-week relevant internship opportunity.

Throughout 2014 we recruited wonderful young people, who completed their internships with MMV LLEN. During their internship we support our successful candidates intensively with pathway planning, equipping them for future roles and the competitive job market. They have created great networks in the sector and have amazing new pathway opportunities. Please read about their success stories on our website.

Applications are now open for becoming an intern in 2015.  Contact us at the office on 9376 7251.

If you are from an organisation and would be interested in supporting the project by taking an intern we would also like to hear from you.

Maribyrnong Jobs

Maribyrnong Jobs is funded through the Department of Human Services where the M&MV LLEN has partnered with Maribyrnong City Council and Women's Health West, Maribyrnong Jobs has presented an exciting opportuntiy for the LLEN and its partners to engage in a trial employment project currently being funded in just Maribyrnong and Dandenong.  The successes and different approaches employed in these two projects will inform the state government, in particular the office of housing, of future opportunities for the state government to collaborate with a range of different organisations and support public housing tenants into employment.

Both projects seeks to assist a minimum of 50 currently unemployed residents in each region, with M&MV LLEN focused on Maribyrnong (particularly those who are currently DHS clients) into sustainable employment by the end of October 2015.  To date we have achieved 20 employment outcomes and a range of very interesting and positive case studies.

Of particular note are:

1. The successes relating to recruiting and training volunteer mentors to work with at risk job seekers
2. The development of a hospitality training project linked to local traders (a growth industry in Maribyrnong that has not to date been catered for by local JSAs and training organisations)
3.  The development of the Maribyrnong Jobs Talent community - a web based tool designed to link local job seekers with accessible job opportunities – www.maribyrnongjobs.com.au

2015 is set to be a big year as we look to engage larger local employers and expand the mentoring program.

YMAP

Youth Mentoring Assisted Pathways has been successfully transferred to Melbourne City Mission at the beginning of 2014.  During the year, MCM and M&MV LLEN have worked together to ensure that YMAP continues to develop within an excellent governance structure, has access to other partners that would benefit from and those that can support, expand and promote the program.
The partnership has also provided YMAP program with the capacity to develop new structure, expand its curriculum and establish diverse delivery models.
This year YMAP has mentored more than
We are thankful to all our partners, including Victoria University, Australian College of Applied Psychologists, the schools in the region.

Family Inclusive Language and Learning Support

The FILLS Program is now operating under the direct auspice of our councils, Moonee Valley and Maribyrnong. In 2014, it has grown from strength to strength, enabling young people from all age groups to gain the additional support they need with literacy, numeracy and homework, while parents are provided with language support.
It currently operates from the Flemington Community Centre on Wednesday afternoon, 4:00 – 6:00 and Maidstone Community Centre, Thursday afternoon, 4:00 – 6:00.
Sport and Recreation Industry Pathways
The Sport & Recreation Industry Pathways project is now in its third year and is a partnership between Essendon Keilor College, Maribyrnong College and Manor Lakes College.
Over the three years it has:
  • Established strong links to Victoria University, Institute of Sport where participating students have had the opportunity to experience applied learning in a tertiary institution.
  • Developed a SARIP Talent Community (www.sarip.com.au) which displays entry level jobs and work experience opportunities in the sport and recreation field.
  • Developed curriculum that integrates sport and recreation themes into other disciplines, such as biology, maths, English, Health and Human Development, and so on.
In 2015, this forms a major part of our work as we intend to document the process that will then be provided to all schools. Schools expressing an interest in developing a school industry partnership will be supported by the M&MV LLEN to do so. We will also use the information from Employment analytics to support themed pilots in growth industries – ie where jobs are more likely to be in this region.
Transition to Independence

TTI supports marginalised young people of African background  to re-engage with community, training and education or prepares them for work placements and/or employment.  The project further focuses on the engagement and capacity building of partners and stakeholders.

2014 has been an exciting year for the TTI project. Our partnerships have increased and strengthen significantly throughout the year and we have successfully established a coordinated service approach supporting the participants of this project.

This year we supported six young people into employment and six young people into long-term education and training.
Some of the young people involved in our Transition to Independence program have created an amazing song and music video with the support of the Cohealth Arts Generator. Please follow link:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLXyHZatUL4
Try a Trade

Try a Trade 2015 will be held on Thursday May 28th 2015 at Phoenix Youth Centre in Footscray.  The Event is now in it's sixth year and this is the fourth year the the M&MV LLEN has joined forces with Maribyrnong City Council Youth Services.

This is a free event and is a fun and interactive way for students to explore the world of Trades.  We take into account skill shortage areas and a majority of the Exhibitors are local TAFE and Training providers.  Each stall holder provides an interactive activity that young people participate in to learn many workplace skills.

If you are a local school or a potential exhibitor please click here and find out how to register your interest to participate.
