Summer update

We're rather irregular in our email update habits. It's partly because we don't want to swamp your already loaded inboxes, but it's also because we tend to post rather more frequently on Facebook (arts.ecology) and Twitter (@artdotearth) and tend to forget about email. But I know that leaves some of behind and lately we've had a few questions about 'when is information going to be available about...'

So here's our update for the summer and beyond.

Coming up in September

On September 2, it's a First Friday and that's when there is usually an opportunity to meet and share food and ideas informally. We always meet somewhere on the Dartington estate, but the venue varies so it's always worth checking in our Facebook page for updates.

On Friday Sept 2nd we'll be in the Garden Room area at Dartington Space (down the hill from the main car parks - big blue sign at end of drive) where there will be an exhibition by Susan Deakin and Kari Furre (more on this later). Bring something to share for lunch: we start around 1pm. Then at 2 or thereabout we'll wander down the hall to the studios of Soundart Radio 102.5fm where Rachel Allain and Katrina Brown will be talking about and showing their work. We usually wrap up around 3.30.

New exhibition in new gallery

For the Language, Landscape & the Sublime event in June we inaugurated a new gallery space called the Garden Room Gallery. It's upstairs at Dartington Space and although it is fairly limited in what can be shown, we hope it will become an important place to showcase work from everywhere.

For just a few more days, until August 1st, you can see Nessie Reid's 'The Milking Parlour' and 'Exchange' by Chris Drury and Kay Syrad.

On August 3rd we welcome local artists Susan Deakin and Kari Furre with intimate sculpture, fish skin bowls, prints and drawings. Because Dartington becomes exceptionally busy with the Summer School of Music in August, lots of people will get to visit the exhibition, but we will not attempt to have a Private View. Instead the artists are suggesting a 'closing reception' on October 14 at 5pm. This is still to be confirmed, but watch our social media feeds for updates.

The Garden Room Gallery is open Monday to Friday from 9-5, but also at other times. If you're making a special journey, please ring 01803 847103 to check opening times.

Coming up later

On Friday 7th October will be another First Friday, and again it will happen in Dartington Space. We're hoping that artists Susan Deakin and Kari Furre will be on hand to talk about the work they have on show in the Garden Room Gallery (it's up from August 3rd to October 15th), called 'Intimate sculpture, fish skin bowls, prints and drawings'.

Once again, bring some food or drink to share, for about 1pm.

A busy November

We'll have a busy November, starting with a First Friday on November 4. Watch future mailings and our Facebook and Twitter feeds for updates on that.

On November 9 we will host an international think-tank group to discuss issues around the aesthetics of renewable energy and our attitudes in general to consumption. This will be a wide-ranging group, not just artists, and the day will be co-facilitated by Richard Povall and by Robery Ferry and Elizabeth Monoian (The Land Art Generator Initiative) and Chris Fremantle (eco/arts/scot/land).

Feeding the Insatiable: a summit

Then at 4pm on that day we kick off our international summit Feeding the Insatiable: real and imagined narratives of art, energy and consumption for a troubled planet.

The event features thinkers and makers from across the world, with an opening keynote event from Land Art Generator Initiative (Robert Ferry and Elizabeth Monoian) with ecoartist / producer Chris Fremantle from eco/art/scot/land. Other sessions focus on Ecologies, Shaping the World, Artist projects, Communicating, Energy Generation and Poetics.

See more detail as it emerges in the programme.

Regenerative Art: a residential short course

...and finally on November 11 we begin an intensive residential short course: Regenerative Art: the aesthetics of renewable energy in public spaces. Find out more at www.regenerative-art.info.
