The Cycle of Care

Everybody has potential to serve, capacity to care, and resources to share. Regardless of age, education or socioeconomic status - we all have something to offer in the service of others. Even simply offering our time and encouragement can work wonders for someone in a difficult situation.

The Sponsor-A-Child program at IT Tender not only provides children and youth the opportunity to get a formal education, it also provides opportunities for them to serve others. Serving develops character and enhances skills that are invaluable for the next generation of leaders. This is why Jizza encourages the youth from Sponsor-A-Child to volunteer at a local shelter for children with cancer.

On July 9th, the IT Tender staff brought youth from our urban poor communities to serve at "Silungan ng Pag-asa" ("Shelter of Hope"). Pastor Junie and wife Au Antinero run Shelter of Hope for poor families traveling to Manila from remote provinces seeking medical care for their children with cancer. Since these families do not live in Manila, they typically sleep on the street for weeks or months outside of a public hospital in Manila while awaiting check-ups for their children. This shelter is thus an immense help for them to have a temporary place to stay.

Youth from IT Tender shared their time and blessings through simple gifts and cards for the children at Shelter of Hope. We were proud to witness our youth save money from their allowance to buy gifts and snacks for the patients. Some of the youth read their cards to the children as a way to encourage them. One of the highlights of the day was when our youth Jericho shared a duet with a girl recovering from cancer. Everyone was entertained and touched by their golden voices.

Our prayers go out to the children and families at Shelter of Hope. We also thank Pastor Junie and Au Antinero for the good work they are doing for those families and for the opportunity to serve them.

In other news, Jam & I were blessed to visit family in Canada over the last few weeks. Finally, Jam was able to experience some of the best Ontario has to offer - cottage country in the Muskokas, Niagara Falls, local farms, and the Toronto Blue Jays! Highlights of Jam's first trip to Canada also include family reunions, a baby shower for our "Coffey bean", and backyard fireworks on Canada Day. We want to thank our Canadian family and friends for all the hospitality. You made her feel very welcome and part of the family/community.

Now that we're back home in Manila, we're gearing up for an exciting event. On August 6th, along with our Filipino teammates, we will be biking and walking to raise funds for our educational programs for street kids and for the college tuition of our Filipino teachers. This is the first time Ride for Refuge will have a team riding in Manila, Philippines!

You can join us in supporting the ride and empowering urban poor Filipinos through education. It's quick and easy to donate, just click here for more information.

Please note that while the main Ride for Refuge event in Canada will be held on October 1st, our ride in Manila will be held early on August 6th - so please give your support soon! If you'd like to bike or walk in the Ride in Canada, it's also very easy to sign up to join one of our teams in Ontario. To join a team riding for IT Tender or to captain your own team, just click here

God bless you and your loved ones,

John & Jam
