Success Indicators in Houbara Conservation Project in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan
Through Houbara conservation project in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, a total of 800 Houbara birds were released in Jordan between 2014 and 2016. In 2016, a total of 20 birds were equipped with a satellite tracking device (ten in Wadi Rum, and ten in the Eastern Desert). For the first time since its release, one male manages to travel north all the way to southern Russia / Northern Kazakhstan. The migration trip started in late March until early May of 2016.

Palestine Sunbird (Nectarinia osea)
A resident species in Rift Valley and Rift Margins highlands, in Aqaba, Petra, Dana, Dead Sea, Jordan River, Zarqa River, Amman, Jarash, Ajloun, Yarmouk, and Azraq. This Sunbird is found within a wider range of habitats from lowlands near sea-level with gardens, orchards, bushy, river banks, and rocky valley to mountain summits clothed in juniper.
It is small but fat-bodied passerine, with a long decurved bill, rather broadened wings, striated tail, and rather long legs, adapted to nectar-feeding and frequently hovering to do so. The breeding adult male looks all-black at a distance, but shows multi-colored iridescence and red and yellow breast tufts at close range. The non-breeding male, female, and juvenile are olive-grey colored above and dusky white below.

Jordan is located along this major bird migration corridor. Birds migrating from Europe pass through Jordan in migrating seasons, spring and autumn. Being a significantly rich country when it comes to birds, Jordan has recorded 435 different bird species. More than 340 of these species are migrant species that pass through the country on their migration between Europe and Africa and vice versa. There is a spectacular spring migration of raptors through Jordan, heading for breeding grounds in Europe, and possibly involving more than 1,000,000 birds, including significant proportions of the world populations of Steppe Buzzard (Buteo buteo vulpinus), Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus), Steppe Eagle (Aquila nipalensis) and Levant Sparrowhawk (Accipiter brevipes). In autumn, thousands of Steppe Eagle converge at the head of the Gulf of Aqaba on their southward migration from Europe to Africa, and hundreds of Montagu's Harrier (Circus pygargus) and Pallid Harrier (Circus macrourus) are attracted at the few isolated water bodies whilst crossing the eastern desert plateau. Also, spectacular numbers of certain passerine migrants such as Lesser Whitethroat (Sylvia curruca) and Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) can be regularly seen in spring.

Evaluate the Status of Hunting Species in Jordan
Since its start in the 1970s, the RSCN has been active in defining the species designated on local hunting lists. However, for a long time these hunting lists have remained unchanged with no updates, despite the declining number of species and disappearance of others. Accordingly, and taking into consideration the RSCN’s staff observations in the field and groups of hunters who have been in communication with the RSCN, a field study then became a must to re-evaluate all listed species in various regions of the Kingdom. Recommendations will be made to sustain the practice of hunting by proposing species that are not under threat and which may not be currently listed, remapping the hunting areas according to the distribution and intensity of species, or making suggestions for breeding of some hunter targeted species.
