Two new AD openings posted to D1.jobs below. One you'll all be familiar with (Missouri) & one of the most unique AD opportunities you'll ever see (CETYS Universidad in Mexicali, Baja California, México). Click here & learn how to advertise your staff openings in D1.ticker.
More on the Missouri AD search as stand-out alum Sunvold comments on his candidacy, "If I was on the committee, I think they would say, ‘You can’t even visit about it'...Some people assume I don’t do anything. I do run a company. Now I’m a curator. There are a lot of things there. I would love to visit with Hank about the AD job, but it doesn’t mean I am actively wanting to be the athletic director. There are just so many things sitting there that we’d have to figure out what to do." One hurdle for Sunvold could be a university rule that prohibits curators from working for the university for two years after their term expires, which for Sunvold is January 1 of next year. - link
Interesting pair of reads of the backstory on the new ACC-ESPN deal. Commish Swofford & Wasserman's Jordan first began seriously discussing a potential move back in 2009. ESPN Prez Skipper secretly addressed the league's TV committee back during spring meetings using a private hallway in the Amelia Island Ritz to avoid media around the grounds. North Carolina AD Cunningham: "All the questions and debate about live content, whether it’s through a cable subscription, a computer, a mobile device – I don’t know. I do know our rights holder (ESPN) will figure out a way to deliver our content to the consumer." (link); Daily Press's Teel adds to the narrative by backtracking on league expansion moves that were key in building in the right markets & more eyeballs. Jordan: "The last six months have been the most hectic. They've been fun, too." Lots more in both articles (link).
Latest Big 12 expansion download: CBS Sports.com's Dodd via Twitter: "B Bowlsby says on XM 55% of B12 revenue is from media rights contracts. Can grow that in expansion. Not so much NCAAT, CFP, ticket rev." (link); Nebraska AD Eichorst on reports the Cornhuskers aren't super happy in the Big Ten, "Proud & privileged to be member of the Big Ten-the oldest & best power 5 athletic conference. Excellence = academics, athletics & life. GBR!" (link); Times-Picayune's Higgins suggests the SEC should go get Oklahoma & Oklahoma State now, right in the middle of the Big 12's process (link); USA Today's Wolken: "Interesting to hear one of Memphis’ pitches to Big 12 is its campus diversity, an area where Big 12 schools are woefully underrepresented. You might be surprised to know (at least I was) that Baylor has the highest percentage of African-American students in Big 12 at 7%." (link, link); UConn Prez Herbst: "I don't believe that there is another candidate for a Power Five league with our first-rate academic standing, international reach and outstanding faculty." AD Benedict pushes Huskies fans to reinvent the dynamic FB game atmosphere of years past. (link): Tampa Bay Times columnist Fennelly: "USF, UCF need teamwork in Big 12 push" (link); Marshall AD Hamrick: "Anything I would say would be pure speculation. That's all I can say. Anything said would be speculation. Have they announced that they are taking four teams? Have they announced that they are taking two teams? Have they announced who they are taking? We just don't know." (link)
UConn brass have selected The Aspire Group to handle ticket sales primarily for hoops at Gampel Pavilion & FB at Rentschler Field. Eventually the unit will have 10 sellers, each with goals of 100 minutes of talk time per day on 80 to 100 calls & 25 to 30 connections. AD Benedict: "If we're proactively reaching out and really trying to sell tickets vs. waiting for people to call us, we're going to see significant results. It's going to translate into more people in the seats, which translates into a better environment, which translates into more revenue, which translates into us being more successful as a whole...[Aspire] knows how to graduate customers from one level to the next. It's a process. It's going to take time. But I've seen it both at Minnesota and even at Auburn." Aspire COO Fagan notes how his company was onsite at both Maryland & Rutgers when those two made conference moves. - link
Thorough review of new suite sales at Kentucky's renovated Commonwealth Stadium with all 67 accounted for, topping at $120K by both JMI Sports & major donor Craft. Last year the new premium areas generated $7.3M. The article also reviews the state of suite sales at Louisville's Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, which are very healthy. Five companies: Bluegrass Hospitality Group, Fifth Third Bank, Pepsi, PNC Bank & LG&E/KU have digs in both stadiums. Suites at Louisville's KFC Yum! Center also noted to cost between $75K & $125K, producing $6.2M last year. More, including a photo gallery of UK's FB suites. - link
Conference USA FB media days will begin tomorrow & the Daily News Journal's Amato looks at five topics in the spotlight. 1) Conversation around & more details on the league's new TV deals; 2) How Big 12 expansion impacts membership; 3) New faces from Commish MacLeod as permanent Commish to a number of new HCs; 4) The status of UAB as the Blazers sit one more year before returning to the gridiron in full; and, 5) Southern Miss is expected to be the West Division favorite, but there are question marks in the East. - link
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
The bottom line for major airlines in the U.S. are pretty healthy. Q2 financial results included American with $955M in net income, Delta with $1.55B, United at $588M & Southwest with $820M. American believes it will add $1B to its revenue line with a new bare bones fare that will compete with the likes of Spirit for the price sensitive customer. Delta & United are trimming some inventory, meaning fares may increase, which investors like. Southwest will continue with business as normal as it tries to rebound from a technology glitch that impacted hundreds of flights last week. - link

New Illinois Senior Assoc. AD for Development Milton sits down with the Champaign News-Gazette for a Q&A. Milton says "the energy's up around town & on campus," notes how his mindset will change from being more individually focused to thinking about the broader fundraising team & its goals, had & has a great relationship with former AD Thomas, but has been "blown away" with the vision of new AD Whitman, "The teamwork and collaboration, I can see that coming back. What we went through the 12 months prior was such a dark cloud and it made everybody tight because things weren’t going well. Things changed in that regard." - link
Long & pretty detailed read on how Kansas & Big 12 student-athletes fare from a full cost of attendance standpoint. Father of former Jayhawk Greene believes stipends are a big help to student-athletes & in some case, like that of MBB student-athlete Traylor, it also helps their families as Traylor sent some money home to his mother on the south side of Chicago. Traylor says he's not complaining, "but it’s a billion-dollar industry, right?" Full list of cost of attendance figures for an out-of-state undergrad to attend each league institution ranges from Baylor's $58,655 to Iowa State's 33,260. COA stipends topped by Texas Tech's $4,820 with Iowa State's $2,430 at the other end. More. - link
Former Baylor female student Hernandez has added an alleged 2011 gang rape of another woman to her lawsuit against the university, former AD McCaw & former FB HC Briles. The new filing says BU was aware of the 2011 incident & "failed to respond promptly and equitably." Pepper Hamilton's findings were also added to the Hernandez suit. No comment from university officials on the latest development. - link
Navy is installing a new 25' (h) x 87' (w) digital scoreboard in the south end zone of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium that will exactly match the dimensions of the version in the north end zone. AD Gladchuk: "That smaller board always bugged me. It just didn't measure up." Gladchuk also notes the digital execution challenges of one board that was much smaller than the other. Daktronics is handling the work at a $2.5M price point. - link
The NBA's relocation of the 2017 All-Star game from Charlotte will cost the city $100M in economic impact. 27K hotel nights were expected around the event to directly produce $60M with the other $40M coming from ancillary activities by those who work in restaurants, shops & the arena. Charlotte Chamber of Commerce: "Charlotte has been and will continue to be a city that embraces and promotes diversity, inclusiveness and equality. We oppose discrimination in all forms. We are disappointed that the NBA All-Star game is being moved elsewhere, but appreciate of the league’s willingness to continue to consider Charlotte for the 2019 game." - link
Los Angeles Clippers owner & notable former tech executive Ballmer talks details of his organization building a streaming OTT service now that no deal is going to be reached with Fox Sports. "In a contract situation, if we aren’t going to get paid as much as we want to get paid by the RSNs (Regional Sports Networks), then we can do that and that’s a great thing. But the real objective isn’t just to take the existing experience and stream it...the real opportunity is to, if you will, augment reality as people are watching the game. Can you put yourself in the position of Blake Griffin? What does the game in question look like in real time from his perspective? Can you sit on the shoulders of Chris Paul or DeAndre Jordan or even someone who plays for the other team? Can we allow you to do that? That is possible over the next several years." Also notes how standard rights deals make the team, broadcaster & cable company lazy. More. - link

It looks like Verizon's $5B purchase of Yahoo is going to happen. recode says an announcement is expected by tomorrow, though few details are known at the moment. Current Yahoo CEO Mayer is not expected to stick around, AOL boss Armstrong is likely to get the assignment of making the integration work, which will be far from easy. Verizon is interested due to Yahoo's ad tech & content pieces, no word on if the Yahoo name will stay or be jettisoned. - link

The WNBA has reversed course on fines for players & teams for those communicating their support of social issues with Black Lives Matter shirts & other apparel. Prez Borders: "All of us at the WNBA have the utmost respect and appreciation for our players expressing themselves on matters important to them. While we expect players to comply with league rules and uniform guidelines, we also understand their desire to use their platform to address important social issues." (link); Comments from Borders come a day after former UConn stand-out Bird tweeted a picture of her & her teammates with black shirts on & the caption of, "There comes a time when silence is betrayal," from Martin Luther King & #WeWillNOTtBeSilenced (link). This will be a very interesting topic to watch play-out on the college level with games in a number of sports beginning next month.
Clemson Assoc. AD of Student-Athlete Wellness & Development Jackson remembers back to the 2006 Duke Men's LAX saga & trying to get out in front of sexual assault developments by appropriately educating Tigers student-athletes on the issues. "What are we doing? What are our policies? What are we telling our young people? We decided to be proactive and prevent, mitigate the management of the situation and recover. So if anything were to happen, we were ready, but also can we prevent these things from happening?" Freshmen & first-year student-athletes get schooled on consent, sophomores on healthy relationships & domestic violence, juniors on bystander intervention & care taking & seniors on rules of the workplace. Real time crisis management simulations are also regularly held with coaching staffs. - link
Penn State AD Barbour earlier in the week on honoring late FB HC Paterno, "You’ve heard it a hundred times, a thousand times — it’s about time and place. There’s a lot going on around this right now, continues to be, whether it’s lawsuits, PR, where the family stands or where a particular group stands, so it’s complicated...I believe when you strip all that away that there is going to be an appropriate time and place to honor Joe Paterno for everything that he has meant to this community — all the things I talked about in terms of character and academics, that’s from Joe Paterno." - link
NewsOK.com's Carlson asks how student-athlete health testing should be improved in light of Oklahoma State's tragedy of losing MBB student-athlete Coger. AD Holder: "The very least we can do at this tragic moment in time is somehow, some way end up in a better place." The effectiveness of EKGs continue to be debated as Oklahoma head athletic trainer Anderson notes, "It's imperfect. The controversy (over EKGs) extends way beyond the NCAA. It was controversial in the NCAA because it's generally controversial in the medical community." An important element to identify possible heart issues is a thorough understanding of how the individual, & their family members, have responded to strenuous physical activity in the past. More. - link
The Tennessean's Rexrode writes on why the SEC's fervent fan bases separate it from the other Power 5 leagues, "...the SEC has unrivaled fan passion, rooted in tradition and the relative exclusivity of these football teams, in areas scarce on professional alternatives. And yes, there’s an irresistible comparison to be made between the gatherings and rituals of SEC Saturdays and the Sunday services in the most spiritual region of the country." SEC Network's Finebaum quick to agree that religion & SEC sports go hand-in-hand. Tennessee booster Fortner says the camaraderie of fan bases in the league is the most notable SEC tradition. More. - link
Harvard Business Review entry, "The Family Dynamics We Grew Up with Shape How We Work." Vantage Hill Partners CEO Jones believes it's crucial to understand this dynamic both individually & throughout a team, "Families, after all, are our first 'enterprise,' and our parents and siblings are our first 'management team.'" Outlines three ways to think through the issue: 1) Make sense of the early family events that shaped you; 2) Self-diagnose how you behave with your team today; and, 3) Make changes happen. Uses three case studies of top leaders to drive home his points. - link
