August 2016 eMail Newsletter

This message is to alert you to the news that plans for future Drawing and Painting Workshops are underway as well as to relay to you details of three Spring Classes that I am holding before the end of the year. But first, I have two local exhibitions to tell you about.

Upcoming Local Exhibitions

The first Exhibition is of paintings involving subjects from the natural world and rendered on Vellum. Various well-known artists have been invited to exhibit and it will be held at the Milk Factory Gallery in Bowral, NSW, 29th September to 27th October, 2016.  Works on Vellum are always so luminous and this exhibition is bound to be very interesting and engaging.

Also in Bowral, the second exhibition, “For the Love of Plants,” is being organised by the Bowral District Art Society Botanic Artists, a group who regularly meet and work together at the BDAS studios. This exhibition runs from 28th October to 8th November, 2016.  If you would like to enter work into this second exhibition, please let me know and I can send you out an application form. Entries close on 14th October, 2016.

Drawing and Painting Workshops

The first Drawing and Painting Classes will be running concurrently with the Exhibition "For the Love of Plants”, at the Bowral District Art Society. I will be teaching two weekend Drawing Workshops. These will concentrate on the skills needed to accurately express the details of plants and their structure. It is always important to show each part of the plant correctly so that it can be visually understood. I believe that good painting has its foundation in sound drawing. Sir Kenneth Clark (1903–1983), one of the best-known art historians of the last Century, wrote of Leonardo da Vinci:

“It is often said that Leonardo drew so well because he knew about things; it is truer to say that he knew about things because he drew so well.”

For those of you who would like to paint, a 4 day Painting Workshop will be held at my studio in Mittagong, NSW, immediately after the second Drawing Workshop at the Bowral District Art Society. We will concentrate on fine Watercolour Techniques and the use of Colour, exploring how unexpected combinations can really bring works to life. This class is intended for those with experience in watercolour painting.
