Dust Off Those Sneakers

Remember when childhood summers were a time when kids and families were active and outdoors? Physical activity is important for children and adults of all ages. Being active as a family can benefit everyone. When school is out, it’s even more important that children keep active. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend a minimum of 2.5 hours per week of exercise for adults and 1 hour per day for children.Get together as a family and set healthy goals that can be achieved by everyone. Is there a family-friendly 5K you and your kids want to work up to running?

National Summer Learning Day: July 14

On Thursday, July 14, 2016 Rec & Ed enthusiastically participated in the nationwide celebration of Summer Learning Day. An annual event led by the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) in partnership with the White House, Summer Learning Day focuses on the importance of keeping kids learning, safe, and healthy every summer. Research has shown that summers without quality learning opportunities put our nation’s youth at risk for falling behind in core subjects like math and reading. Thank you to AAPS Superintendent Swift for visiting Camp Invention and other camps in honor of Summer Learning Day. Watch the video highlighting the day! Our Camp Invention:CREATE has space available for summer campers.

Fun Food Creations

Snacks can play an important role in boosting nutrition and managing kids’ hunger. The best snacks are low in sugar, fat and salt. Fresh fruits and vegetables and foods that contain whole grains and protein are also good choices. Paying attention to portion sizes and the timing of snacks is important so as not to interfere with a scheduled meal. Check out these fun and creative snack ideas.
