No need to tell you what the news of the day was. If you're looking for one piece that wraps-up the Big 12's decision to explore expansion, I would suggest this one from SI.com's Thamel (link); If you really want to dig in, here's the whole transcript of the interview with Commish Bowlsby & Oklahoma Prez Boren (link); Here's what we know: It could be two schools, it could be four schools, or I suppose it could end up being no schools (link); Main factors for institutions in play are strength of athletic dept, fan base size, media market, school's reputation, academic strength (link); Boren said the ACC news of an extended ESPN deal made Presidents rethink the league's approach to expansion, even though two weeks ago he didn't think a traditional linear network would be supported by the marketplace (link, link); Pro rata TV rights (~$25M/annually per addition) seem to be a key driver (link); A vote on new members could come as early as September (link); Not surprisingly, Bowlsby expects to be contact by a number of schools in short order (link). A ton more, including heavy doses of speculation.
Overflow: BYU AD Holmoe on the news: "We are obviously excited the leadership of the Big 12 has advised Commissioner Bob Bowlsby to review potential expansion candidates. BYU is known for its academic excellence and I believe we have an exceptional athletic program. As I’ve stated before, I would like to see our student-athletes compete at the highest level." (link); UConn boss Benedict: "Conference realignment has been an issue and a reality of intercollegiate athletics for decades and there is no reason to believe that it won't continue. The Big 12's decision to continue to explore further expansion [Tuesday] afternoon is evidence of that...We have a record that any school in any league would envy." (link); Houston Chronicle's Duarte, "University of Houston must pull out the stops to earn coveted spot in Big 12" (link); Memphis Commercial Appeal's Calkins, "Big 12 decision means moment of truth for Memphis" (link); The dominoes could impact UMass & AD Bamford says he's watching closely (link); The Sun Herald's Magee also looks at how ripples could play out for the AAC & Conference USA (link).
Other Big 12 developments from Dallas: Oklahoma Prez Boren says he & his peers are satisfied with how Baylor is reviewing its sexual assault issues, "Overall, I would say they were very forthcoming today, and [have made a] strong commitment to the changes that are necessary to make a basic change in the culture on the campus and to have all of their students feel protected." (link); Kanasas State FB HC Snyder threw things for a loop: "I’ll tell you what. There are teams that left our conference right now that wish they could get back in our conference. Two I know of." (link); Oklahoma FB HC Stoops says he'd be fine playing Texas twice in a season if the rematch is in the new conference title game. Overall, "I think for the right reasons, it’s the right thing to do" (link).
More on the ACC-ESPN news: Daily Press columnist Teel relays details of the new linear effort for the league set for 2019, will feature 40 regular season FB kicks & 150 MBB/WBB tips as part of its 400 total games, similar numbers to the SEC & Big Ten Networks. Teel does the math on if the channel can get 60M subscribers paying between $0.25 & $1.00 per month to achieve equality against its highest-paid league peers (link); WRAL's Ovies looked at a number of angles, notes Notre Dame's FB options (or lack thereof) through the full grant of rights in 2035-36, though there's zero indication the Fighting Irish intend to give up its independence, also wonders if the ACC Network Plus digital play could satisfy additional monies owed to the league by ESPN (link).
College FB Playoff Executive Director Hancock was part of the media interviews in Dallas yesterday, though he quickly became background static. Says the new Big 12 FB title game won't make it easier for the committee's selections, but, "That's what the Big 12 has been missing. That's one other game against a good team and now they will have that with the championship game." Continues to laud the integrity, patience & leadership of Texas Tech AD & new committee chair Hocutt. - link
Syracuse.com's Carlson with a profile on new Syracuse AD Widlhack, who recalls his time at SU as a student & then a job interview with "That cable sports thing. EPSN (sic). Or whatever that is." After 36 years in Bristol, Wildhack's impact was clear & significant with wins of negotiations around The Masters, leading the launch of the Longhorn Network & a number of deals with college conferences. Former ESPN Prez Bodenheimer: "He's a winner. He's a doer. He gets things done. He's great at taking an event and making it a bigger deal." Others from the Worldwide Leader point to Wildhack's ability to unite & manage a team & his eye toward innovation. More. - link
Delaware has hired Michigan Associate AD for Development Skolnick to be its Senior Associate AD and Director of Development for Athletics. Since 2012, Skolnick raised over $18M for Michigan Athletics and over $5M for other units on campus. Delaware AD Rawak is excited to get Skolnick on-board after their time together in Ann Arbor: "Over the last five years I have seen first-hand not only his tremendous skills as a fundraiser, but his ability to create and enhance relationships with former student-athletes and friends of athletics. He will play a vital role in the success of Delaware Athletics and the University. We are excited to see the strong impact he will have on our programs." - link
Harvard Business Review interviewed 84 CEOs and other top executives of major corporations to explore how anxiety may influence the strategic decision making of CEOs in ways that might negatively impact their firm. The publication concluded that the more-anxious leaders were less likely to embrace risk despite the potential to drive large gains. Per the article, "Our results suggest, however, that overly anxious (and perhaps paranoid) executives may be less willing to make the big strategic bets that could catapult the company to long-term success. Serious consideration of both potential upside and downside outcomes is necessary for forming a clear-eyed assessment of firm strategy, but anxiety may cause executives to become myopic to such balanced views." - link

The IOC remains undecided on possibly imposing a blanket ban on Russia for the 2016 Summer Olympics as the organization continues to digest the findings from the McLaren report that concluded urine samples of Russian competitors were manipulated across the "vast majority" of summer and winter Olympic sports from late 2011 to August 2015. IOC President Bach said the findings of the report were a "shocking and unprecedented attack on the integrity of sport and on the Olympic Games." - link

More key administrative leadership moves: Georgia Tech AD Bobinski brings back Joeleen Akin as Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Development & SWA. Akin previously spent 13 years with the Yellow Jackets & most recently spent 12 at Agnes Scott (DIII). "I'm very pleased to welcome Joeleen back to Georgia Tech. Her significant intercollegiate athletics experience, positive and energetic manner and knowledge and appreciation for Georgia Tech will allow her to be impactful across our entire organization." - link
HC moves: Loyola Chicago AD Watson turns to Xavier AC Atcher to take over the Ramblers WBB program. The Gonzaga Board of Trustees has approved the funds needed for the new $24M Center for Athletic Achievement with construction on the 51,000-square-foot facility expected to be completed in the fall of next year. The Gonzaga Athletics Hall of Fame, the Student-Athlete Academic Support Center, and a new practice facility and strength and conditioning center are all expected to be new features in the building. Naming rights to the academic support center or the events space are available for $5M and naming rights to the center itself are available for $10M. The project is expected to be funded entirely by benefactors. - link
The Mississippi State women's soccer program is preparing to move into its new $1.8M field house on the site of the MSU Soccer Field on September 1. HC Gordon says the university is "pushing hard" to see if the move can be made in time for the team's first regular-season home game on Aug. 26, but more importantly, he says the new facility shows MSU's commitment to the program: "By this fall, when kids are on campus, they are going to go through there and say, 'Holy cow, there is a real commitment from our athletic department,' which is why I came here to begin with." - link
After confirming with officials at Miami, Florida A&M AD Overton says FB's season opener against the Hurricanes will still be played at New Miami Stadium despite ongoing renovations. Miami AD James released a statement on the renovation project earlier this month: "It's a very complex project and I know the Dolphins are doing everything possible to get it ready in time to play football. We are very excited about what these improvements will mean for our fans and gameday atmosphere. We still expect to play all of our games at the stadium. However, we're aware that things could change and if they do we have a contingency plan in place if needed." - link

A couple of notes: Wall Street Journal's Gottfried & a number of analysts are skeptical that Hulu's new subscription TV service, coming early next year, will be successful in disrupting traditional cable as "The more Hulu charges for a TV service, the less its chances of luring away traditional pay-TV subscribers and convincing them to cut the cord." Early expectations are a monthly fee of $40 to $50 with a wholesale cost of $34. (link); Twitter opened up the ability for any account to become officially verified (link).

Tulane & IMG College will stay joined through 2026 in the terms of a new deal, which includes the funding of "a state-of-the-art television production and new media facility." Green Wave AD Dannen: "We are thrilled to continue working with IMG across the next decade to enhance the Tulane brand across multimedia rights and licensing. As the Tulane footprint continues to grow and the college landscape keeps evolving, we feel very comfortable relying on IMG’s expertise in the collegiate space." - link
Idaho State officials are pushing back on allegations by a former Men's Tennis student-athlete who claimed he was the subject of discrimination due to his Mormon faith. Idaho State University Director of Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action and Diversity and Title IX Administrator Gibson found via her investigation, "the interviews conducted collectively paint a clear picture that the plaintiff was subjected to severe, persistent and pervasive harassment and bullying." Prez Vailas, AD Tingley, HC Goeltz & AC Gross are all named as defendants. - link
Huffington Post contribution from notable author Reed, "Television Runs Sports, And That’s Not Good." Thesis: "Due to the money television networks have invested in sports, they’ve been able to influence sports in many ways, including modifying the rules of the games. Television executives aren’t interested in the purity of sport, or the rules, traditions and values of our games. They simply look for ways to make sports more “entertaining” in an effort to increase profits. If this means modifying the rules, and screwing with the traditions and values of our sports so be it." New Illinois Chancellor Jones will be officially introduced at a news conference this morning. Despite Jones being the first African-American to hold the position of chancellor since the post was created nearly 50 years ago, UI Prez Killeen says race wasn’t the "driving factor" in hiring the former UAlbany president. Board of Trustees Chairman McMillan on what Jones brings to the table: "He brings a really unique background of a lot of dimensions in both the technical side and the social side, which is the kind of person the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign needs." - link
Elsewhere around Higher Ed: Wright State has decided not to host the first Presidential debate due to safety concerns (link); Embattled Temple Prez Theobald has hired Washington D.C. attorney Cotton who is notable for his negotiation of exit deals for outgoing college/university leaders (link); It looks like West Virginia Prez Gee is a getting a new five-year deal to keep leading in Morgantown (link); Missouri may be going through some tough times, but the financial state of its System is still in good shape according to the latest from Moody's (link).
Also noticed: Missed this last week as Grand Canyon has advanced to the fourth year of its reclassification process (link); Marquette has partnered with Game Plan to create & implement a more robust & effective student-athlete experience (link); The 2016 Maui Invitational field was officially announced & it would seem to be the richest collection of MBB budgets in tourney history.
