Beach Holidays
Barefoot Luxury
Most of us relish a day at the beach. White sand beaches with azure waters and waving palms are lovely but they’re far from unusual. However, for those looking for a unique coastal experience there’s a  thrill in sinking your toes into sand at a different kind of shore, one perhaps, like Elafonisi in Crete, or
Vik in Iceland, whose pink or black sand looks so fantastical it could be straight out of a sci-fi film.

Quirky beaches just add another layer to the enjoyment. And the fact that these strange but beautiful beaches were created naturally is perhaps what's most astounding. So, grab a towel and get going.

Hyams Beach in New South Wales has the whitest sand in the world. Officially. At least
according to the Guinness Book of Records. The glorious powdery stretch is edged by lush forests and gin-clear water in an area rich in Aboriginal history. Australia of course is spoiled
for unique beaches, with Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsundays a world-class seven kilometres
of pure sand, and Shell Beach in the north west smothered in pristine shells.

Europe has its own exceptional stretches of sand too. In Crete, Elafonisi is a swathe of white
and pink-hued sand that contrasts strikingly with the beautiful turquoise waters, leading to it consistently being cited as the best beach in Greece. The pink sand grains are actually tiny pieces of coral pummeled and smoothed by the sea. Further afield, swap Crete for the
Caribbean, to discover a second pink sand beach in the Bahamas, at Harbour Island.

Swap sun cream for sweaters and make for south Iceland's Vik Beach, blanketed in jet-black volcanic sand that was created by lava flowing into the ocean. Lapped by foamy waves and studded with glassy chunks of ice, it makes for a truly surreal seascape. Then there’s nearby Jokulsarlon, the black sand stomping ground of Skua and other seabirds, which has starred
as a backdrop in films including Tomb Raider and James Bond.

Pinpricks of electric blue light seem to the mirror stars above on Vaadhoo Island in the Maldives, turning the dark water into a sea of stars and bathing the beach in an otherworldly glow. This rare bioluminescence is the product of phytoplanton in the sea, which glow when disturbed or agitated. A similar, surreal effect can be seen at Mosquito Bay in Vieques, Puerto Rico.

The Algarve in Portugal is home to a string of dazzling beaches that regularly rank among Europe’s best. The limestone rocks of Praia da Marinha have been eroded and shaped to form pinnacles, crevasses and caves. The many shades of ochre and gold transform throughout the day, making the beach a photographer's paradise. Similarly, in New Zealand's Coromandel Peninsula, Cathedral Cove is a stunning natural archway that links two inviting beaches.
