Welcome to the latest newsletter from the National Coastal Tourism Academy.

A lot can change in a month, so the team and I have been out and about making sure that coastal tourism is being well represented and your voices heard.

The impact of Brexit was a major focus of The British Hospitality Summit where we heard opinions from financial advisors and top industry figures as well as former Foreign Secretary William Hague whose advice to the industry was to “focus on those things that have made this industry in Britain so successful”.

This month the NCTA also welcomed the then Minister for Coastal Communities, the Rt Hon Mark Francois MP who described our work as “very valuable”. Mr Francois also spoke in July at The Great British Coast National Conference in Brighton & Hove where he announced funding for a further 20 Coastal Community Teams, adding to the existing 118 currently operating. The North East coast has been the spotlight of deputy director John Carmichael’s latest roadshow, sharing our research and learning more about your challenges and priorities.  While I was pleased to give a presentation to the Ramsgate Regeneration Alliance chaired by Craig Mackinlay MP, who was very complimentary about our work and how our research can help places like Ramsgate to develop. If you’d like to arrange a meeting for your area, please do get in touch.

And finally, if you’re involved in any aspect of coastal tourism, can I urge you to save Monday 17th October to attend our National Coastal Tourism Forum - Shore Potential: Addressing the Coastal Tourism Challenge, see below. As always, please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you’d like to discuss any aspect of our work or arrange a visit.

Samantha Richardson
Director

We’re launching the first National Coastal Tourism Forum on Monday 17 October in London. This new event will bring together opinion-makers, politicians and thought-leaders to drive forward coastal regeneration. We’ll be unveiling new research and hearing from tourism experts to help shape a Coastal Vision for the future – we very much want to hear your views, so please do save the date.

On the following evening,Tuesday 18 October, we’ll be holding a reception from 4 to 6pm at Westminster for MPs representing coastal constituencies to raise their awareness of the challenges and opportunities for growth on the coast. Please can we encourage you to let your MP know about the event.

A barometer of coastal business

We’ve commissioned new research to give a snapshot of business performance on England’s coast. The Coastal Tourism Monitor offers an insight into past performance, business confidence and future prospects of accommodation and attraction providers to help create both a national and regional picture. The research will be conducted in three waves, in June, September and December 2016.
