Myth (and Facts) about Nonprofit Social Enterprise

Nonprofit management and strategy topics seem to come in waves for me at Nonprofits Assistance Fund. The theme of the last quarter seems to be earned income and nonprofit social enterprise.  While the specific questions and ideas vary widely, there are some ongoing myths about social enterprise that I hear over and over that need to be dispelled.

Read more to find out about the social enterprise myths Kate Barr consistently hears:

  • We can't do that!
  • We have to do this!
  • How hard can it be?

NOT-SO-GLAMOROUS, BUT OH-SO-CRITICAL CAPITAL INVESTMENTS

While most components of building renovations are not very glamorous, they are vitally important for patron and client comfort and accessibility. And for some people, without nonprofits' continued dedication to providing access for everyone, they would not be able to participate fully at all. With Mixed Blood's recent renovation, it continues to live its vision of revolutionizing access.

NAF is proud to partner with Mixed Blood and others on their building projects. Read more here.

LOAN SPOTLIGHT

Northeast College Prep

Northeast College Prep (NECP) is a free public charter school that serves students of all economic and cultural backgrounds, with a priority on closing the achievement gap and serving low-income immigrant students.  Modeled on Global Academy (a successful charter school in Columbia Heights), NECP believes that children and adults grow into strong critical and creative thinkers when they have the opportunity to learn alongside others with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

NECP opened in the fall of 2014 with grades K – 3, and is growing by one grade each year until capacity is reached at K – 8 in 2019 – 2020. There are two classes of about 24 students in each grade. The school has mandatory classes in Spanish and Arabic – all students in every grade take both languages.  This is the only charter grade school in Minnesota that requires Arabic. It provides free breakfast, lunch and healthy snacks to all students, and a longer school day and school year than the local district.

NAF is proud to partner with NECP with both school building and working capital support. The school will move into a larger building that accommodates its growth plan with long-term financing through NAF's lending partnership with IFF.
