Things are heating up.

Cool off by windsurfing!

Between high temperatures, extreme violence, and politics this summer is hotter than ever! The one thing that seems to always bring things back down and cools us off is windsurfing. Some even say, "a bad day on the water beats a good day on land." That might not ring true for everyone but we certainly like the sound of it around the USW office.

For many of us this is a chance to get out and sail on beautiful sunny days and hone the technical side of our sailing game before the strong winter fronts come back. For others this is the part of the season with the strongest and most reliable winds, and you just came ashore to read this before heading back out for another session on unadulterated fun! This is also the time of year that people start asking for lessons and clinics and many of us find ourselves giving back-yard clinics as we offer tips to the local newbies. This is the spirit of camaraderie and open friendship that draws so many people to windsurfing. Seeing a big welcoming smile from a stranger as you rig your gear is some of the best motivation to dive deeper into our sport. That smile turns into a friendly rigging tip, which makes for a better session, and turns into grabbing dinner as a group after the sun goes down. That's what windsurfing is to most of us, it's being a part of a huge family that is only interested in spreading the stoke.

Recent news around the nation!

2016 USW Nationals

This year the Nationals went back to the old stomping grounds of the US Open, Oleander Point at Corpus Christi, Texas. Strong winds and fierce chop give Corpus Christ an intimidating reputation. In the days before the event that reputation lived up to its name, but as soon as the event started things calmed down enough that everyone got the kind of action they were looking for. From freestyle to Kona, everyone was on the water at some point either free riding or competing, and smiles were had all around.

Growing Everywhere

Windsurfing is addicting and wonderfully rewarding, we all know this. The big question is, how do we spread this love? Well Out on a lone lake in New Mexico a fellow by the name of Gene is giving us all a lesson in how to do this. Windsurfing can happen anywhere there is wind and water. Sure Hawaii is an obvious choice, but what about those of us living far away from the ocean? Windsurfing is alive and well in all corners of the nation and Gene is a perfect example of the love and passion that this sport inspires.

Off to the Olympics!

It's almost time to gather together and chant, "USA!  USA!  USA!" as the Red, White, and Blue march down the track at the opening ceremonies for the Rio Olympics. Our country and our sport have the honor of being represented by two young athletes, Pedro Pascual (USA11) and Marion Lepert (USA-143)! I think USW speaks for everyone when we say that we are not only proud to see team USA at Rio, but even more proud that we are being represented by two very young athletes! It is always great to see the next generation carrying on the sport!
