USA Today's Berkowitz updates on the O'Bannon case, sounds like we'll know by October 3rd if the Supreme Court chooses to hear the case with it set for distribution to the group for a September 26th conference. South Florida MBB AC Oliver Antigua, the younger brother of HC Orlando Antigua, resigns amid reports of the Bulls being under NCAA investigation for academic fraud. Per the Tampa Bay Times, there could be more departures as current players are involved. USF with standard response: "The University of South Florida and the NCAA enforcement staff are working together to investigate and resolve an inquiry into potential violations of NCAA bylaws and university standards by one of our intercollegiate athletic programs. Because the University of South Florida is committed to protecting the integrity of the investigation and ensuring those involved receive fair treatment, we cannot provide any details about the investigation at this time." - link
ACC Kickoff begins today in Charlotte & CBSSports.com's Solomon outlines five developments to watch: 1) The ACC Network announcement, which will go down at 10a; 2) If Clemson or Florida State is tabbed as the pre-season favorite; 3) Is Louisville a spoiler or contender?; 4) Profiles on new HCs; and, 5) Addressing officiating issues from last year (link); Fox Sports personality Travis dug in on what type of cash the new ACC Network could throw off. Best case scenario, "Combine the revenue from the ACC's Southern states with the $110 million more in revenue from the 37 million subscribers in other parts of the country outside the ACC footprint, then subtract the $100 million in channel operating costs, and you're talking about around $8 million per ACC school off the ACC Network." MBB HCs in North Carolina share their thoughts on the state's HB2 law: Duke's Krzyzewski: "It’s an embarrassing bill. That’s all I’m going to say about it." NC State's Gottfried: "I’m against any law that allows discrimination, whether that’s based on race, gender, sexual orientation. I don’t understand how someone can support this. I think the people at N.C. State, we believe in inclusion. Being a resident of the state, for me and my family, it’s been frustrating." Elon's Matheny: "What I love about coaching is that I can sit down with players of different backgrounds. It’s important to expose players to what’s going on outside the basketball court. It’s important that they’re aware of issues that our state and our country faces. As coaches, we’re the leaders. It’s important that we as coaches at programs — big or small — use our platform to promote a positive message." - link
According to tax docs, Northwestern FB HC Fitzgerald got a $1.1M base pay bump in 2014 which brought his total compensation that year to $3.35M, nearly all of which was base pay as he did not receive bonus monies during that time. In 2013 he earned $2M in base and $200K in bonuses. The same tax forms reveal that AD Phillips earned $635K in base pay, $107K in bonuses and nearly $1.1M overall in 2014. Phillips also the recipient of the balances of two loans, one worth $773,333 on August 31, 2015 and the other valued at $300K. MBB HC Collins with $1.3M salary, including $1.2M in base pay. - link
Eleven of the twelve Pac-12 FB HCs salaries are now available thanks to College Hotline's Wilner. Washington's Petersen leads the group with a 2016 base pay of $3.6M, followed by UCLA's Mora at $3.45M, Oregon's Helfrich and Utah's Whittingham both at $3.3M, Arizona State's Graham with $3.1M, Cal's Dykes at $2.65M, and Oregon State's Andersen made $2.55M. The latest figures for Arizona's Rodriguez ($3.2M), Washington State's Leach ($2.75M) and Colorado's MacIntyre ($2M) came from 2015 data, while Stanford's Shaw made $2.65M in 2014. The marketing folks in Chestnut Hill with a new approach to getting the Eagles on the mind of locals: "Boston's College - in America's best sports town" will be the campaign theme of choice this year. Per Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Caparro, the idea is to increase awareness of the "fan-friendly, affordable family atmosphere at all our games. We want to reach out to the entire Boston community, to those who may or may not have gone to BC, to invite them to our campus to experience Power Five conference sports right in their backyards." Nike reveals five images of the new Michigan gear, which has the block "M" on one side of the lapel and the Jumpman logo on the other, compared to Adidas' centered block "M." The maize color is slightly altered and now called "Amarillo," and Wolverines will be the only school in Nike's portfolio to use that shade. The $174M deal with Nike officially begins Aug. 1. - link

Southwest Airlines says problems with its technology systems are to blame for the flight delays and homepage issues experienced by customers yesterday. The airline posted on Twitter: "Once our systems resume full functionality, we’re offering flexible accommodations for rebooking your travel. Please stay tuned for more." 600 to 700 flights were impacted. Operations are expected to normalize today. - link

Former Tennessee and Southern Miss MBB HC Tyndall's attorney filed a motion saying that the NCAA Committee on Infractions panel did not meet the July 19 deadline to respond to Tyndall's appeal and has requested that the Infractions Appeals Committee not accept the future response. Also from the motion: "Donnie Tyndall further requests that the Infractions Appeals Committee immediately set aside all factual findings and penalties imposed against Donnie Tyndall by the Committee on Infractions." - link
Money: Wyoming raised an all-time high $20.4M during FY16, thanks to 4,500+ donors who helped best the previous mark of $12.8M, set in FY14. (link); Oakland with a 63% sponsorship revenue increase and 40% bump in ticket revenue which resulted in a record $1.2M in contributions during FY16, including a 100% participation from staff in donation efforts (link); Bucknell with a record $2,687,629 in annual support for the athletic department, marking the fourth time in the past five years the Bison Club has eclipsed the $2M mark (link).
HC moves: Minnesota Men's Hockey HC Lucia refuses to confirm whether or not he has a two-year offer for $400K in base pay, but emphasizes that he hasn't signed a new deal yet (link); Florida State hires Florida Golf Coast women's swimming & diving HC Studd to lead both the men's and women's programs in Tallahassee (link); Seton Hall tabs Columbia AC and former UCLA standout Salameda as the next women's tennis HC in South Orange. The Ivy League is moving all FB kick-offs up to the 40 yard line in the interest of improving student-athlete safety & will collect data this season on the change (link); FootballScoop's Samuels reviews kick-off data from the league last year & finds, "Teams in the Ivy League average about 6 touchbacks per team for an entire season, and the average kickoff from teams traveled just 57 yards. That means that the average kick in the league didn’t have enough juice in conference play to reach the end zone, so it will be interesting to see what the sample size and the data collected in this experimental run end up conveying." ESPN: The World Wide Leader has hired Molly McGrath as a college sports sideline reporter and host. McGrath will work the sidelines for Friday night college football telecasts and host College Football Live on select days. McGrath will also be a sideline reporter on the network's college basketball telecasts this upcoming season. (link); ESPN also announced the new play-by-play commentators and sideline reporters that will broadcast the Thursday and Friday night college football games on the network this season along with the news that the company has re-signed college football analyst David Pollack. Thursday nights will feature Dave Flemming, Jesse Palmer and Laura Rutledge, while the Friday night team will consist of Adam Amin, Mack Brown and the newly hired McGrath. (link)
Florida A&M Prez Mangum using a discretionary fund from the FAMU Foundation to give performance bonuses to coaches. So far T&F HC Moore, cheerleading HC Tatum and SB HC Wiggins with an extra $2K for conference titles and the possibility for $1K more for earning Most Outstanding Coach award. Mangum: "I get the sense the coaches love it because I don’t think they’ve ever really been appreciated. It gets them an incentive. It gives the assistant coaches an incentive. In major sports, all of the other coaches get bonuses. And each conference has a structure. At FAMU, we just don’t have the contracts structured that way. This is one way we can retain coaches. Our best coaches are always been recruited away." - link

Nebraska Asst. AD for Creative and Emerging Media Mosier calls digital media "the new hot space," but says Facebook is "still the king." Only Georgia and Ohio State have more Twitter followers than the Huskers (274K). Mosier: "We're representing the cultural pride of a very large audience of people. So I want to make sure on our end we're being respectful to those people who have poured their lives and hearts and souls into this program, and we're reflective of that." Football's use of Mosier and his services especially impactful as Dir. of FB/Recruiting Ops Vaughn says his "target demographic digests" information on that platform and consequently are working on a "75-week plan" of recruiting messaging that would run from a prospect's junior year to signing day. - link

Naming rights: Not official yet, but Miami (FL) AD James with this regarding the naming rights for the proposed $20M-$30M FB indoor practice facility for the Canes: "I believe that we have the individual who is going to make the gift. But as with anything, until we finalize the agreement with them it’s not something that we’re able to announce because we don’t have an agreement in place. As soon as we have an agreement in place, which I believe we have the person that will make that commitment, we’ll make an announcement. Once we get the funding in place, then we’ll start the process that needs to be done in order to break ground." Ole Miss AD Bjork assures fans that Vaught-Hemingway Stadium will be ready in time for the Rebels' home-opener against Wofford: "Everything is on time and everything is under budget. That’s a good thing. It will be ready by Sept. 10. We finished up the practice fields last week for football. Our track facility, it will be done in the middle of August. The big thing is the north end zone project along with new sound system, new lighting, new natural turf field that the guys will play on." - link
Not for the first time, Baylor interim FB HC Grobe says that he would have taken the Nebraska HC job in 2007, but that then-AD Osborne required that some ACs be retained. Osborne: "I interviewed Jim Grobe and I think he's a good coach, but I never offered him the job and there were no stipulations on assistants... I certainly never said to anyone, 'These are the assistants you need to keep.' It's a moot point anyway because I never offered Jim the job." Grobe now says he wished he had left Wake Forest and taken the Huskers job: "I really, at the time, felt we were going to get a bigger commitment in terms of facilities and support for the program that never really materialized. We loved all 13 years we were in Winston-Salem, but I’m not real happy with the way things ended." - link

The NCAA Baseball Rules Committee met this week and will recommend making the video replay rule a permanent fixture in the college game during the regular season. Kansas State Senior Assoc. AD and committee chair Scott: "The responses we have received toward the use of replay have been positive. We felt it was time to give institutions the opportunity to use it in regular-season games." Other recommendations included tougher punishment for use of illegal bats and the verbiage used to describe pitcher windup positions. - link
