Behind-the-Scenes, Creating Encaustic Art

Ever wondered...

What is it like to paint with molten beeswax? It is so good, it's enchanting! The scents are fragrant, the studio, is warm, and here's how it is done:
1) Melt the high quality beeswax to 200°F.
2) Add natural dammar sap resin for gloss & stability.
3) Use pigment stick and oils to add color over the image being layered.
4) Fuse each brushstroke and layer with fire (blowtorch).
5) Scrape and fire where needed, up to 20 thin layers, working horizontally and vertically.

Here is a brand-new video on how this was done creating 84" corporate art for Kent Law Group in Logan, Utah. It is, as they say, 'a labor of love.'
The studio is nestled into the forest, on a canal in the sun - pretty dreamy. There are sounds of wildlife, birds, and waves lolling in. Windows are often open, kids are playing outside, dog is snoring, and it all warms my soul to a level I could only dream of. This work is lovely, and meaningful -  the kids are seeing mama works "hard" at everything we do and collectors remain happy! There is the rare moment where I will grab the paddleboard and head out!

One of a Kindness...

The studio raised thousands from donating two paintings this year to Seattle Humane's Tuxes Auction and our family has agreed to foster kittens for Humane Society! Been fun, makes for a busy, full, family household!

Have done some informal painting lessons with teens. They are fun to work alongside, and I enjoy seeing them spark a passion. May even look into a 2-day adults' studio retreat sometime in 2017, focusing on creativity, health and interiors. Making any creative difference in someone's life is a gift.

More small memorial blocks are on the tables, using a mother's ashes. Doing lots of smaller works for gifts to teachers and students, or the occasional person who likes to grab small, affordable art. Everyone should be able to collect art.

I'm hard at work creating a new abstract, landscape collection for Hunt&Gather Portland; great art partners. We are also debuting a unique mural-esque, headboard or panel series (inspiration photo). The pieces are soothing, serene, and transport your spirit to a good place.  Ongoing work with designers .
