High Heat Alert in Effect for Niagara
Niagara is still under a heat alert, with the scorching temperatures excepted to settle in for the weekend.
During the heat alert, the City recommends a number of measures people can take to cool off:
- Drink lots of cool water even before you feel thirsty
- Go to air-conditioned places, including City facilities (Gale Centre, MacBain Centre), local libraries or shopping centres
- City pools and splash pads are a great way to beat the heat. View hours and locations.
- Take cool showers or baths or use cool wet towels to cool down
- Wear loose, light-coloured, breathable clothing and, when outdoors, wear a wide-brimmed hat
- Wear sunscreen, but try to avoid the sun and stay in the shade or use an umbrella
- Reschedule or plan outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day
- Never leave seniors, children or pets unattended in a car

City Wide Sod Restoration Postponement
Due to the hot and dry weather conditions the City of Niagara Falls is postponing all sod restoration sites until approximately mid-August (weather depending). The lack of rain and consistent hot temperatures is expected to continue and this makes it difficult for new sod to live without constant watering.
Any asphalt and concrete work needed in the repair area will continue (curb, sidewalk and/or driveway). If a City tree was taken down and the stump is coming out this removal work will also continue. Sod work is always completed last after all other needed repairs (so not to disturb the newly laid sod). In the meantime crews will visit each site to fill in the area to make it safe.
Once the weather cools and there is more frequent rainfall the sod restoration will continue.
Should you wish to repair the sod yourself the City will reimburse the material costs only (not labour costs).
View more information on replacing your own sod.
If you have any concerns please contact the Municipal Service Centre at 905-356-1355.
