Congratulations to the compilers of these newly published dictionaries (March - June):
Please check them out.

A list of currently published dictionaries - Published Dictionaries/.
There are 78 dictionaries published on Webonary as of July 1, 2016. There are 2 months left for the challenge of having 100 dictionaries on Webonary by October 1st. That means publishing around 11 dictionaries per month to meet the challenge. If your dictionary is ready to go live, please send me an email and we'll get it published. Remember, publish early and often.

Fieldworks Language Explorer (FLEx) Alpha 8.3.0

I am so excited to announce the release of Fieldworks Language Explorer (FLEx) Alpha version 8.3.0.
Some of the Alpha 8.3.0 features are:
  • One-button publish to Webonary. Once you have an account at webonary.org, it is now as easy as configuring your credentials, choosing what you want to publish, and clicking a button, to upload your data to Webonary. To upload a newer version of your data, just click that button again.
  • New version of the Configure Dictionary functionality, featuring:
    • WYSIWYG dictionary previews. Now the Dictionary view is showing you (nearly) exactly what you will see on Webonary.
  • New configuration possibilities:
    • Option for Senses to “display in separate paragraph” allows choice of whether the option applies to the first sense or not.
  • Hybrid view: A new default configuration that is a cross between root-based and stem-based views. This view is based on the work of Bartholomew & Schoenhals’Bilingual Dictionaries for Indigenous Languages.
You may download it here.
To publish your FLEx database to Webonary, go to the File menu in FLEx, choose Publish to Webonary... and the following Dialog Box will open up. Enter your Webonary site name, your Username and Password. Choose the Reversal Indexes. Then click Publish. That's all there is to it.

DLS Advisory Board meeting - 1 June 2016

Present:

  • Brian O’Herin, Chair, Linguistics

  • Verna Stutzman, DLS Coordinator

  • Kevin Warfel, Assoc. DLS Coordinator

  • Bob Bugenhagen, Eurasia

  • Mike Cochran, LSDev

  • David Frank, Americas

  • Julie Green, Anthropology

  • Sue McQuay, Publishing

  • Ellen Errington, Literacy

  • Timothy Phillips, Malaysia

  • Dennis Walters, Asia

Agenda items:

  1. We’ve added 2 new templates for Webonary, Chinese/English UI and Tagalog/English UI. We’ve created a form for dictionary compilers to fill out for assistance in converting their pre-FLEx lexical data into FLEx.
  2. Verna is currently working with GILLBT to design a Webonary template that will incorporate the GILLBT logo and branding, without upsetting the Webonary branding. Check out the work in progress: http://template-ghana-english.webonary.org/.
  3. In September, Verna will be attending EuraLex 2016 in Tbilisi, Georgia (http://euralex2016.tsu.ge/) and the last week of CD4LD in Istanbul, Turkey and give some presentations about Dictionaries & Lexicography.
  4. John Walker (Africa) would like input on effective methods and materials for training national lexicographers in the dictionary development process and related software (e.g., FLEx); Online materials (tutorials, Teaching plans - FLEx 8, Rapid words resources).
  5. Suggestion to develop best practices and design parameters for selected dictionary types. (Dennis Walters)
  6. Mother-tongue lexicographers. What tools work well for that key group of customers? What products do they want to produce? To use?
  7. Corpus-linguistics approach. Seems like there’s a lot of leverage here that a traditional field linguistics approach leaves untapped. Anything in the works?
Rapid Word Collection Workshops
The Rapid Word Collection questionnaire is available in nine languages at http://rapidwords.net/resources (scroll to the foot of the page). Check to see if it has been translated into the Language of Wider Communication which you use in your project. If not, you may volunteer to do it.
Check out reports of RWC workshops at http://rapidwords.net/reports.
If you would like to publish a dictionary on Webonary.org, please fill out this application form. If you already have your dictionary on Webonary.org, but it has not been made public, please send me an email, verna_stutzman@sil.org.

It is easy to publish on Webonary.org if your lexical data is in Fieldworks Language Explorer (FLEx). If you are using an older program like Toolbox or software that is not designed specifically for Lexicography and you need help converting and importing your lexical data into FLEx, please fill out this request form.
