The Charleston County School District’s Early Head Start / Head Start program participants met at SWU’s Charleston education center to provide professional development for their teachers and staff during the week of July 18- 20. There were 40 total participants each day. Pictured, Leah Thomson, admissions coordinator, welcomed the teachers and their aides.
She also spoke to them about SWU’s new early childhood and family studies degree program, the MEDCL and MEDAS programs. According to Dean Grile, senior regional director, “It’s a win win for SWU and CCSD. It’s a great opportunity to be generous with our community, a chance to show off our newly remodeled facility, and an opportunity to tell teachers and aides about what SWU has to offer here in Charleston market.”

Congratulations!

Randy Kuhn, an online management professor for SWU’s School of Business, placed second at the U.S. Open World Martial Arts Championships, black belt heavyweight division.

Keith Smith (’84) received his master of arts degree in political science from Georgia State University in May 2016. Smith, a member of SWU’s board of trustees, currently serves as legal counsel for a technology company in the Atlanta area.

He is planning to seek either a master of health physics or master of public health upon completion of the engineering program. SWU ‘transforming’ its fleet

The first Transformers movie came out in 2007 with subsequent releases (Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon, Age of Extinction). In 2017 Hollywood tells us that we will be “blessed” with Transformers 5: The last Knight; However, for those disappointed in not having something this year, SWU is in the process of releasing its’ own version entitled Transformers: The Pursuit of Better Gas Mileage.

Since the leases for the three Ford Flex’s (left) expire in July, SWU is removing them from its fleet and returning them to Edwards Ford in Walhalla. In exchange, SWU is adding to the fleet (right) a Ford Fusion, a Ford C-Max (hybrid), a Ford Focus and a Ford Edge. As a result, the university’s monthly lease payment will be reduced by $90 per vehicle.

Earlier this year, SWU sold off two aging Crown Victorias and two vans. In exchange for those, SWU added a C-Max (hybrid) and a Focus. According to Mark Reeves, VP of finance and auxiliary services, “While the Ford Flex is a very dependable vehicle and has served the university well, we are finding that our non-van usage is usually by one or two occupants and they typically do not need the extra room and size of the Flex. These replacement vehicles bring with them a much higher combined gas mileage rating than the Flexes, Crown Victorias and older passenger vans. This change also allows our physical plant to continue efforts related to creation care and sustainability.”

For details about changes to the fleet, contact Reeves at ext. 5021 or email mreeves@swu.edu. To reserve a vehicle for University business, contact Debbie Eller in our Physical Plant at ext. 5663 or email deller@swu.edu. When reserving a vehicle, please supply a copy of your driver’s license and copy of your current insurance card. Both of these items are required by our insurance carrier to be an “approved driver” under the vehicle insurance policy.

SWU hosts Duke Energy

SWU once again welcomed staff of Duke Energy's Oconee Nuclear Plant to Central for their leadership training July 20 in The Founders.

Blueberries are in!

The Schmutzes have an abundance of blueberries, especially right now in the rows of young bushes. Come pick your own blueberries at New Life Farm, 725 Clayton (close to SWU and next to Potters Place). The cost this year is $9 per gallon, and a portion goes to the SWU scholarship fund.
Bring your own bucket or container, or borrow theirs to return later. They use an honor system, so cash or checks can be left in the money box at the bucket tree.
