UCSB'S FIRST HUMAN
POWERED SUBMARINE
In 1989, a group of Mechanical Engineering students designed a human-powered submarine as their final project for ME156C (equivalent to today's capstone). Pictured here, they're testing the sub in Ocean Engineering Lab's large wave tank, constructed from a surplus Navy fuel tank and canopy from a jet fighter. Our students have always been great at finding creative ways to build innovative transportation. Have you checked out the UCSB Hyperloop Pod?
MEET TEAM SHELLPHISH
From the first ARPAnet node, to one of the world's best white-hat hacking teams, computer science is a rich part of UCSB Engineering's history and future. The hackers of team ShellPhish - a group of students from SecLab, UCSB's Computer Security Group - are finalists competing in the DARPA Cyber Grand Challenge, the world's first all machine hacking tournament, at Def Con 2016 next week. Computer Science Professor Dick Kemmerer started the Reliable Software Group in the early 80s, which evolved into SecLab in 2007. Today, SecLab research takes on social network security, malware, and cybercrime.

Jaiom Sambyal
MS '83, Mechanical Engineering
"Dr. Fred Milstein was one of the greatest teachers I had during my graduate studies at UC Santa Barbara from 1981-1983. I am grateful for him to have given me an assistantship during my graduate program. Around November of 2007, I was visiting UCSB with my two kids who were looking at different colleges to pursue their undergraduate studies. During that visit, Dr. Milstein, who was still teaching in the Mechanical Engineering department, told me that if I ever wanted to get my PhD, I was still welcomed to pursue it under his guidance."
