Open house tour features research efforts
Tennessee Valley center hosts agricultural leaders

The Tennessee Valley Research and Extension Center in Belle Mina hosted an open house tour July 19 to help inform state legislators and other leaders in agriculture about projects researchers have going at the center. Participants also learned of Extension efforts to share results of that work with farmers in the region.

TVREC: Value-added beef
Researchers at the Tennessee Valley Research and Extension Center in north Alabama are working to provide a systems-management approach that would add value and profits to beef cattle operations.

 

TVREC: Battling crop pests
Several varieties of cotton are being grown in a Tennessee Valley product evaluation test to help growers manage or control reniform nematodes, which are especially troublesome in poor crop rotations.
Invitation to participate in beef research survey
People who eat beef can be part of a study investigating how consumers handle fresh beef products from the time they leave the supermarket till they get home by taking a three-minute, confidential survey. Derek Griffing, a Ph.D. student in Department of Animal Sciences associate professor Christy Bratcher’s lab, is conducting the study and survey.

AT THE STATION
The Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station has 15 outlying research units located throughout the state, each representing a different soil type and climate region. Here's a snapshot of some of the research underway in Spring Hill.
Ornamental Horticulture Research Center

Trials are focusing on best management practices for preventing boxwood blight disease, a fungus that has yet to be reported in south Alabama but that affects nurseries and the boxwoods throughout the country. Experiments also are being conducted on boxwood cultivars, evaluating them for resistance and ensuring clean stock is available if growers are unable to obtain desired cultivars from outside the state due to quarantines.

September Agronomic Crops Webinar

Sept. 13, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
The agronomic crops team from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System is presenting its monthly webinar on Sept.13 covering wheat control in wheat, climate forecast and managing Hessian fly and barley yellow dwarf.

Central Alabama Crops Tour

Aug. 25, 8 a.m. - 1 p.m.
The Central Alabama Crops Tour will be held Thursday, Aug. 25, beginning at 8 a.m. at the E.V. Smith Plant Breeding Unit located at 3049 Alabama Highway 229 South in Tallassee.
