Big 12 expansion download: Texas Governor Abbott, Lt. Governor Patrick & University of Texas Chancellor McRaven & Prez Fenves all took to social media to express their support for Houston's bid to join the league (link); Austin-American Statesman's Davis suggests there's a deal in the works to get the Cougars added to the Big 12 in exchange for UT's push to acquire 332 acres of land in Houston, though some state leaders & UH Board of Trustees Chair Fertitta shoot down the rumor. The article also notes that any AAC institution who leaves will owe a $10M exit fee. (link); Utah Governor Herbert responds to Abbott on Twitter on BYU's candidacy (link); Oklahoma Prez Boren sidesteps a questions about Fenves's endorsement (link, link); Fox Sports columnist Mandel believes yesterday's developments clearly mean Houston is in the driver's seat, "Previously I've said Cincinnati was the leading candidate. I'm now inclined to say it's Houston." (link); BYU AD Holmoe with more comments, "We’ve got a long way to go to prove our point, but we’re going to get after it. At this point in time, there's not a lot to report because we'll learn a lot more in the next days and weeks to follow. At that point, we'll have more to say. This is something that's been a long time coming and now we're going to try to put our next foot forward." Utah AD Hill in the same article on the potential of a Pac-12 school making the move, "I’ve heard nothing about that...I think the whole expansion thing is just something you can’t speculate on." (link); SMU AD Hart: "We feel that we belong and have assets no one else can offer." (link); East Carolina AD Compher: "I believe strongly East Carolina deserves to be in the Big 12 as we can deliver the entire state of North Carolina. We have been positioning ourself to be the next member for the past 12 months and will continue to do so." (link); Appropriate timing for Memphis to note FB season ticket sales are pacing 18% ahead of this time last year (link); Same with Colorado State's record fundraising year of $31.8M (link); Former Colorado State AD Graham thinks the Rams have a better shot at getting added if the process plays out in a longer time frame of a couple of years (link); Fresno Bee's Warszawksi: "When it comes to Big 12 expansion, Fresno State lacks the measurables" (link).
From ACC Kickoff: The new ACC-ESPN deal becomes official, both digital efforts starting next month & a linear play by 2019. Wasserman's Jordan, who was key in the process, "If the network performs even moderately it will put the ACC in a situation where they’ll be very, very competitive financially with the upper tier of the collegiate industry." The biggest piece of news that we didn't know precisely yet is the league's MBB schedule expansion to 20 games in 19-20. Virginia Tech AD Babcock: "It’s the most important thing we had to do in this league," also says he'll spend $2M to $6M to get his infrastructure up to speed. ACC Network Extra will begin with 600 contests in the upcoming competition seasons & grow to 900 by 2019. Commish Swofford notes a rights fee jump, but no word on exactly how much, also says he leans to a nine-game FB slate. ESPN's Skipper says the linear timeline will give all parties plenty of time to ramp-up appropriately (link, link); Campus Rush columnist Staples with a catchy title & some additional angles, "Ninja commissioner John Swofford secures ACC's future with deal for new conference network" (link); CBSSports.com's Solomon clearly points out that the Big 12 will now be the only 'Power 5' members without a dedicated linear network (link); WRALSportsFan.com's Ovies: "RE: ’19 launch of ACC Network. All parties involved say it won’t be flipped from ESPNU or ESPNN. I remain a healthy skeptic on the matter." (link); Georgia Tech AD Bobinski: "It’s a brand new business venture. A start-up is a start-up. But we’re very optimistic." (link); Duke boss White: "We can't be a clubhouse leader, can't be a real power-five player without a network. This had to happen. This isn't a frill. This is a necessity. The inventory was part of making this become a reality." (link); NC State AD Yow indicates she'll allocate $6M to build a new broadcast studio & control room. Clemson's Radakovich simply says the league couldn't fall behind (link). There was also FB talk in Charlotte yesterday & we'll try to catch up on the good stuff tomorrow.
Some movement on the Purdue AD search as search committee chair Berghoff says the job has not been offered to anyone yet, though it sounds like his group is at the "short-listing" process & three finalists will meet with Prez Daniels before a decision is made. DHR International remains "highly involved." "We want everyone to know that. I know it's been very quiet, which probably concerns some people, but it has to be quiet. These folks we're talking to have careers of their own and we're not eager to put any of those at risk." - link
Troubling allegations published by the Washington Post on George Washington MBB HC Lonergan & possible verbal & emotional abuse toward student-athletes. Former Colonial team members comment on the situation, one, "I don’t think the guy should be in sports. I don’t think what he said should be tolerated. I would like to stay at GW. I will not play for Mike Lonergan." Lonergan's response: "I will not respond to anonymous, unfounded allegations. These types of accusations have already been investigated by the University and found to be groundless. Those who know me know that I conduct myself and run my program with integrity." Specifically, Lonergan is alleged to have told one previous student-athlete that he should go play in a "transgender league." Lots more, including notes on AD Nero. - link
The NBA has decided to move its 2017 All-Star game from Charlotte due to the HB2 bill, "We have been guided in these discussions by the long-standing core values of our league. These include not only diversity, inclusion, fairness and respect for others but also the willingness to listen and consider opposing points of view." (link); ACC Commish Swofford notes the magnitude of the NBA's move, believes leadership in his league will want to have further conversations about the issue & 2016-17 championship sites (link); North Carolina Governor McCrory: "The sports and entertainment elite, Attorney General Roy Cooper and the liberal media have for months misrepresented our laws and maligned the people of North Carolina simply because most people believe boys and girls should be able to use school bathrooms, locker rooms and showers without the opposite sex present...American families should be on notice that the selective corporate elite are imposing their political will on communities in which they do business, thus bypassing the democratic and legal process." (link)
Penn State AD Barbour touches on a handful of topics, starts with how important the next two or three years are for the Nittany Lions competitively, but more importantly from a support standpoint as facility improvements & fundraising are at the forefront. Continues to be excited about the leadership of FB HC Franklin & MBB HC Chambers. Still working through the planning phase & funding model for Beaver Stadium moves, "we’re about 15 million real dollars behind where we were five years ago, so whatever the incremental is with the Big Ten media rights money, that just helps us get back to whole." Late September or early October pointed to as a timeline to release the Master Plan. More, including comments on sexual assault on college campuses. - link
Illinois AD Whitman continues to be front & center, still super focused on tweaking the culture on his team to be where he wants it, which will positively impact the fan base. Expectations for first-year FB HC Smith, "I think more than anything it's just competitiveness.  We certainly want to go out and be in games to the very end and to capture some games that maybe we aren't expected to.  I think the hallmark of a good program is to win the games  you're supposed to and to find a way to get it done in a couple situations where maybe you're not supposed to." - link
Tulane Deputy AD Burke is headed to Iowa as Senior Assoc. AD for Sport Administration & Event Management/SWA. "I'm excited to be joining the Hawkeyes. Iowa is a great university with a rich athletic history. I share the passion to win, graduate, and do it right and look forward to working with the coaches, staff, and student-athletes." Iowa AD Barta & Burke worked together at Wyoming a handful of years ago, "Barbara will be a great addition to our team." - link
Additional admin leadership moves: More Illinois as AD Whitman promoted longtime staffer Milton to Senior Assoc. AD for Development, Assoc. AD Goines will also move to Champaign to continue assisting the fundraising effort after a handful of years doing so in Chicago (link); The WCHA has hired a new VP & Women's Commish in "longtime New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) executive Katie Million" (link); Tennessee has a new Assoc. AD for FB Compliance & Administration in former Alabama Senior Assoc. AD Bowling (link); North Carolina names Strom-Gottfried as its new Director of Ethics Education and Policy Management on campus, a cabinet-level role created in response to the 2014 Wainstein Report (link).
Temple Prez Theobald has reached an agreement with the university on his exit, effective August 1st. Will receive a year sabbatical at $725K, plus benefits & deferred comp, in addition to the right to return to the university as a professor. Board of Trustees Chair O'Connor: "It's an unfortunate turn of events and we're glad it's resolved. This is painful, but it's over. We move forward." - link
Deepest condolences to Oklahoma State as MBB student-athlete Coger has passed away after collapsing at a workout yesterday. MBB HC Underwood: "Tyrek was excited to be at Oklahoma State and had such passion for the game and was looking forward to being an OSU Cowboy. Losing a member of the team is like losing a member of the family. But we know our loss pales in comparison to the pain his family is going through." - link
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
TSA security lines are getting better, much better, as the agency quickly restructured this summer & has reduced wait times from 25 minutes to 18 in Denver & a more stark hour-plus to under 10 minutes at O'Hare in Chicago. American Airlines Managing Director of Corporate Security Freig: "I think they’re getting there. They still have a long way to go, but they’re getting there. We all have collectively saved the summer so far. It’s not finished yet." Solutions big ($26M allocation for staffing & revamps) & small (barrels for water bottles before the screening tables) pointed to as reasons for the improvements. More. - link

Northern Illinois AD Frazier was interviewed on SiriusXM on Wednesday to discuss how sports can be a positive force amid increased social unrest. Impressed & proud to be a former SEC student-athlete after Commish Sankey led with a quote from Nelson Mandela at his FB media days last week, "Sport has the power to change the world." Frazier's father is retired from law enforcement & brother is a police officer outside of Boston. Believes he has a responsibility to help others understand these issues given his position & ethnicity, but also his educational training & background. Having regular conversations with peers on how to get out in front & help incrementally solve one of our nation's most pressing issues. Lots more. - link
Baylor interim President Garland and regent chairman Murff talked about the progress of instituting recommendations from the Pepper Hamilton report. Murff flatly says "we did not implement Title IX properly" or have it properly funded, offering that hiring a full-time coordinator should have been hired earlier than 2014. Garland outlines his goals, stating: "Manhood is associated with three B’s: the billfold, the bedroom and the ballpark. We need to redefine those." Both address concerns about transparency, citing FERPA and desire for expediency of action as to why the process unfolded as it did. - link
Utah Jazz team President Starks has played a role in settling some of the discord between state hoops programs, brokering a yearly double-header between Utah, BYU, Utah State, and Weber State that has Beehive State ADs buzzing. A "no-brainer" according to Weber State AD Bovee, BYU AD Holmoe says "It's going to be a tough ticket to get. … It could turn out to be something great," while Utah State AD Hartwell calls the event "a great platform to promote basketball in what I can see is a basketball-crazy state" and hopes it takes on the feel of the Final Four. - link
HC updates: Oregon State named Hawaii swimming & diving AHC Buffin as its next women's S&D HC (link); UMass named alumna and former Indiana field hockey HC Robertson to the same position (link); Wright State softball HC Curylo has accepted the same position at her alma mater Illinois-Chicago (link); Columbia named Purdue AC Tanelli as its next wrestling HC (link); Busy time in Lexington, as Kentucky softball HC Lawson received a new five-year contract that escalates from $210K to $250K throughout its life (AAV jumps $84.5K from $145.5K to $230K). Additionally, men's soccer HC Cedergen also inked a five-year deal, while rifle HC Mullins got a four-year deal, and three-year deals were handed to gymnastics HC Garrison and women's tennis HC Drada (link); Navy extended the contract men's lax HC Sowell thru the 2021 season (link); Former Morgan State women's basketball HC Beasley, who was reassigned to another position following a verbal abuse accusation, denies the claims, says two parents are out to get him, and said the school never involved him in an investigation (link).
Shortly following the announcement that former AD Villareal was stepping down, North Texas contracted with two local businessmen for $10K each to "examine and assess the resources, staffing and facilities of the UNT Athletic Department, making a full report to the UNT President," per the contracts. While a non-disclosure for both, one of the men told a group of UNT supporters last month that the school has a "fractured" fan base. Evals are running concurrently to AD search aided by Eastman & Beaudine. - link
Scout.com's Matecun has run a five-part series on Power 5 FB student ticket prices. Texas A&M's 12th Man ($290) pays nearly double the 2nd-most expensive seats in the SEC (although hoops tix are also included in College Station). Florida State ($240) leads the way in an ACC where half the schools cover the cost as part of tuition. Ohio State ($252) tops the Big Ten, where cost appears to correlate well with team success. Oklahoma State ($250, includes hoops) paces what currently stands as the the Big 12, while Oregon's 2015 price ($367) more than doubles the next highest in the Pac-12. - link

The News & Observer's Kane with six things to look for from North Carolina's response to the five major allegations against the Tar Heels stemming from the NCAA investigation: 1) How is UNC describing the fake classes to the NCAA?; 2) Will UNC again contend that all students had equal access to the classes? ("if UNC continues to say the classes in question weren't associated with athletics, it will contradict some of the Wainstein report's findings"); 3) Who will UNC identify as guilty parties, and how were those people handled? (no disassociation letters issued to date); 4) How does UNC respond to exhibits in the notice that cast MBB and FB in a bad light? (Wainstein investigation found several that would support the allegations of failure to monitor and lack of institutional control); 5) Will UNC offer any help to Jan Boxill? (she has already been "forced into retirement" per Kane); and, 6. Will there be signs of a settlement? (UNC could opt for summary disposition, contingent on Boxill's consent.) - link
Kentucky FB toured its new $45M, 100K-square-foot training facility for the first time on Wednesday. One player tweeted "It's better than a movie theater" when describing the team meeting room. Other features include turf and natural grass fields, multiple meeting spaces, a Gatorade bar, barber shop and dining hall complete with a personal chef. - link
Beer at ballgames: Tulsa is the latest to add beer sales to its FB gameday repertoire. Since 2008, beer has only been available in the suite and club areas of H.A. Chapman Stadium, but this year will be available for general seating areas as well. AD Gragg: "Basically, this is a measure to help with our gameday experience. We’re really responding to a lot of what our constituents would like to see. We’ve done a lot of surveys and studies. This isn’t something you enter into haphazardly. Over the past couple of years, we’ve been looking at this, especially at other venues in our conference. I think it’s important to talk about revenue, especially in today’s economic climate. Whatever we can do to lessen a university subsidy toward us is always a good thing. That’s the case with athletics across the board. You always want to find ways to have to more revenue-generation possibilities. This is certainly one of those." - link
Newsday's Herzog writes on the difference between the lacrosse recruiting process from that of other sports. Specifically, many players bound for the college game commit to a school before even entering high school. Duke MLAX HC Danowski: "I miss the days when we only talked to juniors and seniors. Coaches are like businessmen, always looking for an edge, a competitive advantage. Somebody somewhere thought that committing somebody at a young age was an advantage. They were probably thinking, 'Maybe we can beat other competitors to the punch.'" Syracuse WLAX commit Wurzburger among the youngest to do so, announcing her decision this past January at the age of 14. Back in 2012, four players committed to DI schools during their freshman year of HS and the trend has continued since. NCAA rules prevent coaches having contact with recruits before Sept. 1 of his/her junior year of HS, but parents and coaches can communicate on the student-athlete's behalf. - link
Elsewhere around Higher Ed: Louisville Board of Trustees chair Bridgeman says Prez Ramsey has "resigned" and that the group will accept it at the Aug. 16 meeting (link); Vermont Prez Sullivan named Vice Chair of the NCAA Division I Presidential Forum (link); Interesting read on the decision by schools to use search firms when selecting a new president or provost, a choice that ranged in costs from $25K-$160K during the 2015-16 cycle, chart with school's choices included (link); Speaking of search firms, four have made their pitch to the Iowa Board of Regents to get the assignment to help find Northern Iowa's next president with a decision expected next week (link); Amazon and Wells Fargo have teamed up to offer Amazon Prime Students a 0.5% reduction on interest rates for private student loans taken out through Wells Fargo Education Financial Services (link).
Also Noticed: Alabama AD Battle was released from the hospital July 8th after a stem cell transplant and will return to work on a "limited basis" soon (link); Notre Dame FB tweets a video of its Shamrock Series uniform to be worn in the game against Army Nov. 12 (link); Kennesaw State's Owls Fund sets a fundraising record with $839,682 raised last year (link); Anheuser-Busch InBev may proceed with the $101B merger to take over SABMiller after agreeing to sell SABMiller's stake in MillerCoors. (link); As expected, Monsanto says "no" to Bayer's $65B takeover proposal, but Bayer says it will continue to pursue a deal (link); Riddell Inc. the latest to be named in a lawsuit by FB players as former Pittsburgh Steeler Thigpen and other former NFL players have accused Riddell of "failing to warn the players about the extent in which their helmets provided protection." (link); Per Real Money analyst Passeri: "Goldman Sachs is launching a $1.3B 7yr loan (covenant-lite) to back UFC's $4B LBO" (link, link).

Colorado State Athletic Director, Joe Parker, starts this 1.Q with thoughts on what he's found to be the most difficult part of being an AD for the first time. Parker also provided feedback on how he prepares for meetings with President Frank, the importance of analyzing past decisions, how he stays abreast of developments on the Fort Collins campus outside of athletics, what books he's personally & professionally reading right now & my favorite question, which athletic administration staff had the most talent in one place at one time.
