North Valley Hospital announces new Chief Medical Officer and Chief of Staff

North Valley Hospital is pleased to announce that Dr. Jason Cohen has accepted the position of Chief Medical Officer and Dr. Ryan Gunlikson has taken on the role of Chief of Staff.

Join Us to Celebrate Dr. McFadden's Retirement

Join us to celebrate the wonderful career of Dr. Kenneth McFadden and to wish him well in retirement. 


The party will be at the Canoe Club at The Lakes Subdivision on August 31, 2016 from 5pm-10pm. All who worked with Dr. McFadden or knew him during his career are welcome to attend. 
Planetree Award Winners

Congratulations to our 2016 Planetree Award Winners! 

Our Planetree Caregiver of the Year is Robbie Kolodejchuk, Dr. Beth Brandenberg is our Physician Champion and Kathy Cummings, RN received the Jake Heckathorn Spirit of Community Award. All three of the award winners were recognized for their outstanding service to patients, fellow staff members and the community.

The Planetree Festival is back in 2016! Please join us on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 anytime between 3pm-8pm for this celebration of community and the Planetree philosophy that makes North Valley Hospital unique.

Come out to the hospital to partake in interactive booths, learn more about the hospital’s services and departments, see the DaVinici robot, enjoy refreshments and learn more about the Planetree philosophy. We’ll see you there!

The Fish 5K/10K Color Run will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2016. This is a 5K walk or run and 10K run and includes a free breakfast. The event supports the Great Fish Challenge and it's cheap to participate - only $10! Register now for a BRIGHT day of fun and fitness!

The 2016 Dragon Boat Festival takes place September 10-11th at Volunteer Park in Lakeside on Flathead Lake. Spend a day by the water cheering for our team, the North Valley Hospital Healing Dragons.

Walk to End Alzheimer's is coming to Kalispell on Saturday, September 17th, 2016. North Valley Hospital is a proud sponsor of the event. Join us in supporting this worthy cause by participating, volunteering, or donating.

North Valley Hospital Welcomes New Providers
Joe Goffena, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, has joined the staff at North Valley Behavioral Health. Mr. Goffena previously worked in the Embrace Health program at North Valley and is looking forward to working closely with individuals to meet their mental health needs. 

Mr. Goffena’s special interest areas include depression, anxiety, relationships, and the special challenges that older adults might be experiencing.

April Schottelkorb, Ph.D., LCPC, NCC, RPT-S is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, and Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor. Dr. Schottelkorb earned her doctorate in counseling from the University of North Texas and master’s in counseling from the University of Montana. She is trained to work with individuals of all ages in clinical and school settings, but has significant expertise providing an evidence-based intervention for children called child-centered play therapy (CCPT). 

Dr. Schottelkorb worked as a counseling professor at Boise State University for 8 years and as a school counselor for three years in northwest Montana prior to working at North Valley Hospital.

Kyle Stansbury, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, provides behavioral health services for individuals age 13 and older at the North Valley Professional Center in Columbia Falls. He earned his Masters of Social Work from New Mexico Highlands University. Mr. Stansbury’s professional experience includes Behavioral Health Specialist for students with emotional disabilities or acute needs, Clinical Therapist for adolescent and adults and Family Services Therapist.

Dr. Mitchell Ramsey, MD is board certified in Otolaryngology and Neurotology. He completed his medical education at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, and later held fellowships at the Harvard Department of Otology and Laryngology, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. Dr. Ramsey focuses on disorders of the ear and skull base and including hearing loss, pediatric and adult cochlear implants, and more.

North Valley Hospital Foundation is Participating
in the Great Fish Challenge
North Valley Hospital Foundation is a participant in the 2016 Great Fish Challenge. The Foundation's focus this year is raising money for increased access to mental health resources for at-risk adolescents and families. The campaign runs through September 16, 2016.

Would you like to help North Valley hospital and get a free, delicious lunch? We have an immediate need for volunteers to work in the gift shop for various 2-4 hour shifts! 

We'll train you on the easy to use computerized cash register. Volunteers are required to get a seasonal flu shot (provided at no cost), and we'll conduct a reference and background check.

You'll meet friendly people and enjoy a free meal in the Valley Cafe before or after your shift.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
September, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, is a good time to be informed about prostate cancer. Each year, more than 29,000 men die of prostate cancer.  However, if diagnosed early, the five-year survival rate is almost 100 percent. At ten years post diagnosis, 98 percent of men diagnosed early, are living.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, reminding us that breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for women. As with most cancers, early detection can save lives.

Penne Pasta with Herbs and Tomatoes

Showcase the many cherry tomatoes from your garden in this delicious penne dish with fresh herbs and summer tomatoes.

Ingredients

8 ounces uncooked penne pasta
1 cup frozen green peas, thawed
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
6 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
3 cups cherry tomatoes, halved
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/3 cup thinly sliced fresh basil leaves
3 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
1 ounce fresh Parmesan cheese, shaved (about 1/4 cup)


Preparation

1. Cook pasta according to package directions, omitting salt and fat. Add peas during last 2 minutes of cooking. Drain.

 

2. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-low heat. Add oil; swirl to coat. Add garlic; cook 4 minutes or until garlic begins to brown, stirring occasionally. Increase heat to medium-high. Add tomatoes to pan; cook 1 minute. Add pasta mixture, salt, and pepper to pan; cook 3 minutes or until thoroughly heated, stirring occasionally. Stir in basil and parsley. Sprinkle with cheese.
