Welcome Coach Dion – 8U Head Coach

WWFHA proudly announces the placement of Anne-Marie Dion as the Washington Wild 8U coach for the 2016 – 2017 season. Coach Dion grew up in LaGrange, NY, where she started playing hockey at the age of 10. During her career, she played for both house and travel teams in New England, before attending the Berkshire School in Sheffield, MA, where she participated as a member of the varsity hockey team.

Subsequently, Coach Dion attended Northeastern University in Boston, MA, where she played for the club team (ACHA D1). The starting goaltender for her final three years, she earned a spot on the ECWHL First-Team for her play over the course of her senior season. A two-sport athlete, she also played for the club lacrosse team while at Northeastern.

Coach Dion’s coaching experience includes many camps and clinics over the years, including the Pro Ambitions camps, Boston Bruins FUNdamentals, and the NY Rangers Learn to Skate program. She also worked an internship with the Boston Bruins as a Youth Hockey Development Intern over the course of five months. Recent coaching activity includes coaching girls’ lacrosse, including the Queen Anne Quick Styx here in Seattle.

Coach Dion brings an attitude of excitement to the Wild organization; she looks forward to working with the younger girls to help them grow into great hockey players.

Student Coaches & Mentoring

Maybe you have heard the phrase, “You don’t really know something until you teach it.” The best test of whether you really understand a concept is trying to teach it to someone else. Teaching calls for complete understanding of the concept. You can’t just "kind of get it" or know it just well enough to get by; teaching calls for thorough knowledge. Countless studies show the value of peer mentoring, kids teaching kids. Both the student and the teacher benefit.

WWFHA will offer student coach training at the beginning of the season. Stay tuned for details. Young Wild players look up to and adore their ‘big sisters’ on the ice. An added benefit: student coaches earn volunteer hours applicable for school graduation requirements.

The Experts’ Edge

Positive under Pressure
For youth hockey players approaching the higher levels of their sport, pressure can be a nearly constant factor. Giving these players the tools to properly manage pressure – and their minds – is essential to helping them unlock their full athletic potential.

Perspective, positive self-talk and mindfulness are powerful tools we should strive to provide.

Dr. Peter Haberl, sports psychologist for the United States Olympic Committee, helps explain why that is the case – and how young players can train to reach their peak.

Ask WWFHA

How do 8 Year Olds Learn Best?

Whether it comes after a top-shelf goal, a pass on the tape, or a great save, it’s no secret that young hockey players thrive on positive feedback.

But what happens when your child makes a mistake – like allowing an easy goal or turning the puck over? How do you react? More importantly, does your “advice” sink in?

Click to read how neuroscientists and the United States Olympic Committee senior sport psychologist answer these questions.
